Hi guys,

Have a ridiculously full five night itinery in NYC coming up, and wanted anybody's feedback on the following places!

- Birdland - jazz bar

- Sardi's - overpriced rubbish or NYC institution?

How soon is now?
Go and find Jimmy's Corner, its a bar about 5 mins from Times Sq - West 47th I believe. Jimmy the owner was Muhammed Ali's corner man for many many years. It's a real old style New York bar, very narrow, a couple of ok looking bar staff and horrific toilets

Never been to either but there are plenty of on line reviews - Zagat or Time Out give pretty good reviews of most places. Try Hogs and Heifers if you have time - definitely touristy but worth it to see the bar maids dancing on the bar barking out orders on a megaphone, plus all the bras on the ceiling.

I'm there! ;) I'm literally staying IN Times Sq (and paying a lot for it - I'm staying in officially the 4th best hotel in NYC! :D )

I'll likely check one or both out..

If you want a freebie trip, then I recommend the Staten Island Ferry.

It gives you the best views of the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan.

Great on a sunny day. It's free to and from Staten Island.

Here is a pic I took from one of the ferries.

Amazing pic, Ansel!

I would check it out but we are making Financial District and all the stuff at the bottom into one day - I'm not sure we'll have the time..

Make sure to go to Virgils if you like Southern BBQ. One of my favorite spots in NYC and just around the corner from T Sq.

Hove...
Went to the Blue Note (great night) and have heard that Birdland is another flagship Jazz bar so whoever is playing when you are over there will be top drawer... See if you can find out who'se playing and let us know. I'm sure there are NY listings sites on the web...

When you're there, see if you can grab a copy of the village voice, (a free paper available from a friday-ad type rack on the street). That will tell you whats going on..

Was also talking about music venues with my colleague... We are both very much into music and were saying that if we went to NYC again, we'd probably try and get chatting with people in different bars or local music shops to see if anyone awesome was playing any last minute stand in gigs. I bet your bottom dollar if you look hard enough you will find some awesome musician playing in a small cheap/free venue after they have finished playing at madison sq garden or something.

Maybe you can keep an eye out for Adam Deitch or Tommy Igoe (Fantastic drummers and resident in NYC). Anything they will be involved in will be awesome!!!

Good luck buddy and enjoy yourself...

What kind of beer prices by the way? They have a $10.00 cover for resident bands and $10.00 minimum food/drink spend per head - I'm guessing a beer is around $7-10?

There isnt that much to see down this way (im in the World Financial Centre - nmber 3) so The feery is deffo worth doing along with a stroll across Brooklyn Bridge
