He was granted a testimonial in 1905 - Albion 3 vs 3 Spurs - 'The Jackson Souvenir Cup' - A social gathering afterwards, it was announced that the trophy was to be offered for competition annually between schoolboy teams representing Brighton & Spurs.

To quote the Seagulls! book...

1901/1902

The lack of scoring power was not the only problem within the team, though. It emerged that John Jackson had a blazing row with his captain, Frank McAvoy, at Christmas, and the situation simmered until late February when McAvoy set upon Jackson and knocked him to the ground. Needless to say, the Scot never played for the club again, but the feud continued. With Jackson apparently going in fear of permanent injury from the ex-captain and his pal Clem Barker, things came to a head in August 1902 when the two former players went looking for the manager at his Farm Tavern beer-house. Fortunately Jackson was in Lewes at the time, but McAvoy warned Mrs Jackson that "We are going to the station to meet your husband, and you must consider yourself lucky if he is brought home alive!"

Enough was enough. A couple of weeks later the pair were convicted of threatening behaviour at Hove Police Court and were bound to keep the peace for six months in the sum of £10.

Quite a bit about him and his time with us in "Albion. The first 100 years" I could scan it and send it over if you like

Thanks for that, I'll do some editing...

..and for this. That would be VERY useful. If you could include the references of the book (publishing date, author, publisher, ISBN number) that would be even better - wikipedia likes that sort of thing. If I give full references, it's much more likely the article will survive. I've sent you my e-mail by PM.

Isn't it amazing to see only 7 managers from inception in 1901 up to the early 60's when I started supporting the team, followed by 31 managerships up to Gus? I don't think I ever realised quite how long managers served in those days, like Charlie Webb for 29 years! I guess that was quite normal in those days. Different era.

I don't think Brighton & Hove Albion took a place in the Football League until sometime after the 1910 Charity Shield victory, presumably we were in the Southern League from our founding in 1901?
