New Scholars have joined...

<< Martin Hinshelwood, the club's director of football, said: "Connor has been given a scholarship not because of who he is but what he can do". >>

I can't quite put my finger on why I find this quote amusing. It might be something to do with the name 'Hinshelwood'.

:lolol:

Good luck to the lad, anyway.

he is not very good apparently - obviously a bit early to be writing anyone off yet, but it will be interesting to see how he gets on

Dean White, the club's first team coach, said: "He has played at schoolboy level for Japan and we are very excited. Twentyinch Sanyo gained a place on merit and not for who he is".

I note there are no strikers among the new in-take. I cannot remember us ever producing a home grown striker who's gone on and been really successful. Why can't we??

I can't ever recall a decent striker coming out of our youth teams, that is to say one who's gone on to consistently score goals at Football League level.

Robinson has potential but is too inconsistent, Gatting seems to have stalled completely. Then there was Chris McPhee- worked hard but never in a million years up to it at League Two level, let alone League One. Scott Ramsay has scored a bundle in non league but is unlikely to go much higher. I can barely even remember any others- was Simon Fox a striker?

Come to think of it, there are few youth team graduates who've graced our midfield either- Dean Cox when he's in the mood perhaps; and certainly the only goalkeeper who played with any regularity was Mark Ormerod, who was then released and never had any success elsewhere, dropping into non league.

The only youth team products who ever seem to make it at professional level (either with us or elsewhere) are defenders. Lynch, Elphick, Paul McCarthy, Mayo, Dan Harding, Ian Chapman, Stuart Tuck (for a while) and so on.

So why are we turning out defenders with apparent ease, but can't seem to produce much else? Is defending that much easier than other disciplines?

Ian Muir was one of our youngsters in the 80s. Think he was released and signed for Tranmere where he scored a hatful of goals.

Hammond, Fraser, Robinson, Cox, Loft

I don't think Tuck would be playing CM tonight either, he said to me hes never had the engine for midfield, only just enough for full back too.

Hammond, Fraser, Robinson, Cox, Loft

I already mentioned Robinson and Cox, forgot about Hammond who admittedly would be considered a success as another club have seen fit to pay money for him.

As for Fraser, he's not yet a regular with us, and I was thinking of players who'd gone on to have reasonably long careers. I hope he does, but he's not an automatic pick by any means yet. You could hardly put Loft in that category, even if he was a youth team graduate, which he's not.

Going back to the new scholars, you could guess which of the lads in the Argus photo was Wilkins' lad, couldn't you? He has that lovely Wilkins hair (obviously from Dean's side of the family and not Ray's)

Lewis Dunk (Brighton and Hove). I play football on Sundays with a guy who has the same last name and plays for Three Bridges, I wonder if they're related.
