New London to Manchester Line ?

So the Tories have come up with the idea of a new Heathrow-London-Manchester railway line,just one of a number of 'idea's' at this years conference. Just the little matter that it will take 12 ( Twelve ) years to build !!

Not a lot, but the new line would get you to Manchester in 1hr 20, compared to 2 hours now.

I'm for it if it stops another runway at Heathrow being built.

Since they have already spent a fortune a few years back upgrading the West Coast Main Line to take Channel Tunnel trains, wouldn't it be a sexier, cheaper promise for the Tories simply to announce that they would introduce a fast service from Manchester to Paris?

Came home via the new Shepherd Bush main line station tonight..., well reopened after years.

I suspect a few on here may visit it come Christmas since you can easily access it from Brighton and it's next door to an absolutely huge new shopping centre, the biggest? in London which opens at the end of October.

It's been delayed because one of the platforms was too narrow according to current legislation. Well the platform on one side is tiny and I predict absolute carnage there come Christmas time.

One benefit though, is QPR away (if that ever happens again in the not too distant future) is now a very very easy one from Brighton.

The idea of the road from Folkestone to Honiton which was going to eventually become the complete M27 was scrapped due to the costs involved. Also I thinkl there was the questrion of not being able to gain the required legislation etc and build it during 1 term of office.

And the FACT that the quickest way from Folkestone to Honiton would always be the M20 - M25 - M4 - M5 route. Or M20 - M25 - M3 if you only want to go to Southampton.

Glad I dont travel with you: as the quickest route to Honiton from Folkestone is M20 M25 M3 A303 by a long long way both in time and distance. That wouldnt have been, so had the M27 been extended as was the original plan to run a major trunk road from Folkestone to Honiton. All the route finders etc will tell you that it is longer to go M25 - M4 to go west than go M3 and through Bracknell and join the M4 at jct 10.

We are so bloody crowded and just cannot see how they can create this high speed line. To get 180mph+ the line needs to be straight like the French TGV.

Your right. This is not a tory grand scheme. This idea has been mooted for at least two years now.

Another example of the conservatives not actually having any policies under David Cameroon. They make a good opposition (because they argue with everything the government says), but if they actually got elected they would not have a clue what to do.
