The Concorde 2 like all other licensed premises is to have its license renewed, but there will be one major change that will affect a lot of us. The police have decided to stop C2 from holding all-ages or 14+ shows where alcohol is served. All events where alcohol is served will have to be strictly over 18's only.
The police have an issue with the arrangement of young persons mixing with intoxicated adults and object to ‘mixed’ events on the premises. They say that the licensing objectives of ‘Prevention of Crime and Disorder’, ‘Public Safety’ and ‘The Protection of Children from Harm’ figure significantly in their decision.
This will affect most indie / rock gigs, as the fanbase is generally of mixed ages, both under 18s and over 18s.
As an independent promoter of such events, I consider 14+ shows at Concorde 2 to be a safe and controlled environment for young adults and an important part of today's live music culture. Anyone who has attended these shows will know that Concorde 2 take very strict measures to ensure the safety of these kids (extra security staff, no under 18s in the bar area, no alcohol on sale in the main hall, no re-admission - meaning the kids have to stay in the main hall until the event is over and cannot loiter outside the venue).
The new laws will come into affect from Thursday 24th November. The directors of Concorde 2 are still in negotiation with the council and police, to see if they can appeal against the decision.
Please help support them in their appeal against the council and the police to keep these shows at Concorde 2 by signing the petition online:
