Toshiba Satellite would be the best option. I am using it from 2 years and it never gives me any problem. Specially the battery back up is superb.

I think, as the list of about 10 different brands on this thread shows, there really is no such thing as a bad machine nowadays.

For general home email, web, picture, music use, any new laptop you buy will do the job just fine.

Good idea in theory but what about the cost of buying software to go on a Mac ?

I've not spent a penny on software for my Macs since I've been on the dark side other than the (very cheap) OS upgrades as and when.

can't afford one sadly, my budget was £500, but the less the better. On that note I plumped for the Samsung R730 NP-R730-JB09UK as it was on a special deal at that website. It was at least £100 cheaper than everywhere else and has literally just been delivered.

I've just seen this thread and what people are recommending.

I'm astonished that anyone would recommend anything with an Intel Core i3 processor.

This is the modern equivalent of the Intel Celeron which was laughed at in I.T. circles as it was known to be cr*p and much slower than the marketing would have you believe.

It's basically a cut-down, budget, cheap-as-chips processor for people who only need to use their laptop for very basic things.

Don't get less than an Intel Core i5 processor on any new laptop.

You get such a rocketship fpr £500 now, that desktops are a thing of the past.
My Acer Aspire Timeline X with i5 500gig 4g memory and 8hrs plus of battery life is all I'll be needing for a long while

What gets me though, is paying that much or more just for a friggin' mobile phone!

Bought a Macbook in the states 5 years ago. Never had a single problem, battery life still about 4 hours.
Before this went through 3 laptops in 3 years.

Buying my niece a Macbook for her 21st next week as the Dell I got her for her 18th has died completely.
