Wife and I are going to buy a new car, well not new but 1 year old because you lose so much in the first year on deprecation, she fancies a Focus C Max either petrol or diesel and I fancy a Skoda Octavia Diesel. Has anybody got either that they could give me an opinion on.

Personally I'd go for the Skoda out of those too, never been impressed by Ford Diesels. For me it would be a Peugeot though.

We've got a C-Max petrol, not bad, but not as versatile as the Picasso it replaced (picasso replaced a Skoda Felica). No idea where you are looking to pick one up from but might be worth taking a look at Woodbourne Garage in Brighton. They get hold of ex Motability cars. Our C-Max was 2.5 years old when we got it, had under 6,000 miles on the clock, fully serviced and maintained by Motability, and had the remaining 6 months Ford warranty. My dad used to have a Motability car so I knew how well they used to look after their cars.

I have a Golf GTTdi, which has the same engine as the Fabia and Leon, it is pretty pokey but still gives me around 50mpg on local driving and nearer 60mpg on motorways. The Fabia and Leon are probably quicker still, with the same engine, as I reckon they are lighter than the Golf. Personally I don't reckon you can go wrong with any of the three, it just depends which you prefer to drive, they all have a decent reputation when it comes to build quality.

have the c-max petrol and apart from a gearbox that will not last the warranty seems pretty good, the back windows are tinted and from a short distance looks a bit like a hearse,i like the seats in the back they can be flattened and folded up so in effect you have a van if required, fuel consumption is not the best or worst of its class, nifty controls on the steering wheel for radio ect, perhaps its just mine that dosnt like going in reverse but other than that im quite happy with a c-max

My ex next door neighbour had a Skoda Octavia and was very impressed with it. He is a taxi driver and found the Skoda to be very reliable, which obviously is important when you need your car to make a living

Personally I prefer the look of a Focus, but that isn't enough of a reason to buy one

Don't you get a Motability car? Did you know that if you are in receipt of DLA Higher Rate Mobility but do not srive yourself, you can nominate another driver to have the car to use to drive you around? Just thinking of the fact, you are your mum's main driver, as to whether she could nominate you as her driver and you get a new car that way?

You know that a number of "Ford" diesels are Peugeot units, right? The 1.4 and 1.6 Duratorq's *are* Peugeot HDi and there are other Pug based units...

Go for the Octavia - no contest.

I was in an organisation a few years ago where we had a fleet of 24 Octavias, including mine which was the top spec TD estate (and still only about 15K list new at the time) :)

They got absolutely hammered in our "care", worked really hard, thrashed, massive mileage, long service intervals and generally not looked after as they might have been.

I was there for 2 years and the only problem we had with those cars was where someone dinked one a couple of times. Totally reliable, cheap to run, cheap to insure, decent amount of power, decent interior, top spec has all the bells and whistles.

At peak times of year we would have to take rentals on top of the Octavias and we used this time to compare other makes and models. Nothing came close to delivering what we got from the Octavias and that company is still running them trouble-free.

They're great cars and I would recommend them to anyone. In fact, I have, and three of my friends and colleagues have them and love them.

Like I say - no contest.

Only problem I've encountered with the newer Skoda Octavia diesels, is the failure of the dual mass (anti-vibration) flywheel which in turns knackers the clutch, but this will be replaced under warranty if you're buying at a year old. Could be costly in future when the warranty runs out. Don't really get what the c-max is all about, doesn't have 7 seats or the vesatility of something like a Zafira, just a bit more headroom and less boot space than Focus estate. Both pretty reliable now though.
