Aother trip along the M42 between M40 & M6 resulting in a 50MPH speed limit due to roadworks. Cant recall last time there was no roadworks along this stretch of road. Is there a road worse than the M42 for constant roadworks and speed restrictions.

I'll give you the stretch between Flitwick and the M25 on the M1. It seems like 15 years this has been causing problems

The M6 is always shite, on one football trip to Liverpool on a Friday about 7 years ago it was closed with a diversion via Lichfield. The Stoke area stretch northwards always cr@p, sheer volume of cars and eternal roadworks. After that, instead we’ve always taken the 2 hour train trip from Euston.

I've opened this thread and thought -

"Was there"?

An odd sentiment having driven that stretch twice yesterday.

Yep had years of that travelling South back to Sussex for games, in-laws etc. Can't win as now I am back South, the other in-laws are up there. I cannot think of a worse road than the M6, it is usually the worst part of our journey unless we travel at 2am or something. Hate it.

So, how we getting to Burnley then?

(Yes I am a big boy, I will check a route nearer the time but until then it’s more of a general discussion)

Without me looking at a map, is the M1 an opinion cutting across at Leeds for example? I might leave early, is/are The Pennines up that way?

The M6 was so clear yesterday we didn't even bother with the Toll Road.

Something I wasn't happy about as nomansland wacky races past the booth is always a highlight of traveling north.

I just wish the road works would actually fix the the *ucking roads rather then make them worse. The road conditions are awful and especially noticeable if you ride a motorcycle.

We didn't use Toll Road either.

Drove both ways to west of Brum on the M5 in accordance with Waze and Google Maps instructions.

Only issue we had was being held up for 20 minutes heading up to Liverpool behind a police car slowing traffic to a stop. 5/6 police vehicles them flew past us on the hard shoulder to a car that had been stopped. As soon as a police van turned up someone was immediately bundled into the back of it. No idea what it was about but we were then soon on our way.

Ive done the Sussex to Telford run for 22 years now. When using M40 to get to M6 onwards north of Brum it's almost always a better option to turn left at top of M40 and go west along M42, then join M5 north which then merges with M6 north of Brum. There's nothing in it mileage-wise but time-wise defo quicker.

This route avoids NEC and Brum Airport which can always be potential bottlenecks.

Unless you want to use the toll road, which would always be the best option in rush hour.

That's what we did both ways yesterday (y)
