Got to 10 minutes before the end of episode 1 of Ripley and the 'wooden' beach scene where he meets Dickie and Marge had me switching off it was just so bizarre and stilted. Great noir aesthetic but the rest of it left me cold. As others have pointed out, at 47 Scott is far too old to be playing Tom. (Soz)

You missed one off of your Guy Ritchie Bingo card....crime boss in clink but still pulling the strings as he runs the prison.

Also gave up after two episodes. May give it another go if there is nothing else watchable.

For all the well known stars in it, the acting is hammy in the extreme, the plot is full of holes and the swearing is extreme simply for the sake of it. Got to say, I think this is utter garbage. But then I thought Fool Me Once was just as bad and people seemed to like that as well......

Finished binge-watching Ripley. Overall, we thought it pretty brilliant. The visuals alone are truly stunning, and this never lets up from the opening scene of E1 to the final devastating shot of E8. Yes, Scott is too old for the part but after an episode or two we were too swept up in Highsmith's glorious storytelling to notice or to care. The Italian characters, especially the fearsome Inspector Ravini and the succession of cartoonish male hotel receptionists, are wonderful creations. The only negative for me was the weirdly wooden actor who played Freddie Miles. But overall, highly recommended for its top notch production values and irresistible plot.

^ I’ve gone back to it, Moutarde, and 5 episodes in I have to say it’s won me over and well worth anyone’s time. Freddie Miles was very bizarre left-field casting, it’s actually Sting’s daughter who plays him, someone who now identifies as non-binary, while Freddie is supposed to be this alpha male character, a part Philip Seymour-Hoffman absolutely nailed in the film remake.

They’ve tried all sorts of careers. Music. Modelling etc.

Nothing seems to have stuck that well.

Never heard their music but if the acting is anything to go by, I shan’t bother.

Ha. Talking of music, Johnny Flynn, who plays Dickie in Ripley, wrote and sung the theme tune to The Detectorists, as you're probably aware, and is sometimes in a band with his sister, The Sussex Wit. Excellent vocalist/musician, his sister too.

He is super. I see him live when I can and got a few of his albums. On CD.

He makes occasional music with the author of the excellent book, The Old Ways.

Another vote for Ripley, I have watched the first two episodes and really enjoying the series. Filming in black and white seems to have added to the cinematography and added to my overall enjoyment.

Same for me - really enjoyed the first two episodes. Andrew Scott is a brilliant actor, too. Looking forward to continuing tomo eve after watching the football tonight!

TBH I didn’t know they existed apart from The Talented - the Matt Damon one. I’ve read three of the Ripley novels and can see why they lend themselves to the big screen. Highsmith knows how to craft a plot. For anyone unaware, her first novel, and probably my favourite after The Talented Mr Ripley, became the classic Hitchcock thriller of the same name, Strangers on a Train. Well worth reading.

I watched Ripley’s Game.

The one with John Malkovich I believe.

Dire. Really bad.

JM pops up in the new series. A knowing and cheeky nod to this film, I suspect.

The first Talented Mr Ripley film adaptation is 1960's 'Plein Soleil' starring French heartthrob Alain Delon. Not a bad watch.

Allegedly the Aussie's tried to do their own remake in 1982, called 'The Talented Mr Ah Ripper Mate' starring Paul Hogan as Marge and Dame Edna Everage as Tom.

Not netlfix, but on Amazon, Fallout starts tomorrow. As a big fan of the game I'm super looking forward to this. I'm trying not to let my expectations get to high, but its difficult.
