Every week you read of accidents involving old people and automatic cars. I see this even made it into The Sun today. Good old Seaford.

Why on earth are old people so prone to hitting the wrong pedal in automatic cars? This kind of thing appears in local papers all around the country every single week.

I remember an old dear in a Metro hitting five cars in my local Sainsburys a few years back. After shooting forward into one car (needless to say, she was driving an automatic), she panicked even more and shot backwards into another one, then forward again, several times until she eventually came to a stop.

What is so complicated about having only two pedals to choose from that evidently causes so many pensioners such confusion?

ive said it before and god darn it I shall say it again, a driving test renew at 60years, 65, 70, 75 then every two years until they fail. Old people are a MENACE on the roads!

They have to reapply for their licence every few years once they reach a certain age.

But that said, I don't think the process is that stringent, and it's certainly not a retest, more a confirmation that your faculties are still intact.

yeah a proper retest especially of reaction speeds is whats needed, something that to me is blatantly obvious yet the government/DVLA seem to do f*** all about it.

It's because when a doddery old driver does something daft behind the wheel- cruises along a dual carriageway at 20mph, drives the wrong way up a motorway or one-way street/careers across the pavement into a house/shop/child in a pushchair, it's viewed as a source of amusement, kind of "oh well, it's only to be expected, bless him, never mind".

Whereas if a 19 year old male ploughed into the front of a shop, he'd more than likely face questions about it, both from the police and the media.
