Who’s to say Steve Clarke’s guidelines on selection aren’t just “no Billy, no party” :lolol:

Tbh in the past Clarke has selected players even if they haven’t been playing but tended not to play them as first choice, that includes Gilmour in his first season here. So yeah. It could still affect his Scotland chances.

How do we know any of them are better than Billy? We know what what he can do and he’s good enough to start for me.

If it turns out that these players do all come in and are decent then fine but Pascoal has already gone and Milner won’t play every wee

Exactly. He hadn't been back in training for long due to injury so was not going to start yesterday regardless. Presumably when fully fit, and without transfer speculation, he is starting over Milner.

What’s the main theories out there? Is it that the technical higher ups have decided he’s dispensable? Is it Hurlezer himself? You do get baffling stories in football and this is one of them. We really needed calmness on the ball in that first half today and that’s certainly something he has in his locker
Gilmour is a good squad player, but there are elements of his game that aren’t quite there, tackling for one. If he went to Italy he’d be fantastic, more time etc…

I feel we’re going for more strength this year, and over the years we have looked light (physically) in comparison to some other teams, thinking about the Villa’s and Newcastle’s.

Re Wieffer, he’s coming back from a long injury in a far tougher league, you have to give him a chance. He was great vs Villarreal, but that was a friendly. Gilmour, MacAllister and Bissouma started slowly if i recall.

Gilmour doesn’t make the same mistakes as Wieffer did today. I’m still baffled by this one. He fits perfectly in the team Milner isn’t the answer.
It was Wieffer’s first EPL game and he got better as the game progressed…like most of our players did.

As for “fitting perfectly in the team” he’s lightweight, a bit slow, plays the ball backwards too often and doesn’t score any goals. If we are to progress we really need an upgrade on him.

The main theory is that Fabian can't wait to get rid of Billy Gilmour because he isn't tall enough and doesn't score goals, and Fabian is only interested in having 190 cm midfielders who shoot like Socrates. So there's no room for WBG and the club will sell him for £12m to Napoli.

At least that's what I've been told repeatedly over the last month. Personally I've labeled the above as stupid nonsense since day one.

Personally I think Billy and his top level playmaking and control in tight spaces will be very useful and that he's going to be one of the strongers challengers for a starting role in midfield. When he's match fit I easily see him outcompeting Milner.

Then again, if we keep signing three players a week a sale obviously gets more likely. But Napoli and others can take their £12m and shove it.

Obviously entitled to your own opinions but he was excellent in last season's 3-0 victory over Newcastle and this doesn't look like backwards passing to me.

I don’t fully understand what that graph is telling us. The y axis is “Progression received” what is that?

Largely to do with the talent coming in I expect (as I said above, the MF has got very crowded this window) but also our new manager’s style of play.

WBG is a great player, excellent technical skills in tight areas and his passing accuracy is excellent - some of which Weiffer could have done with yesterday - However Hürzeler (note sp!) seems to play with a more open/spacious midfield than RDZ did and it’s often the wingers cutting in deep in midfield and driving forward the attack as Minteh and Mitoma did yesterday - I don’t think it a case of WBG suddenly becoming out-competed in quality, more a case of a change of emphasis in roles overall perhaps?

Yes, but starting over Gruda, who Hurzeler seems very enthusiastic about, or O'Riley?

RDZ’s tactics will win games although I’m doubtful it will win leagues or trophies in top leagues. There has to be a compromise between attack and defence. Roma away playing the way we did was suicide and I’m sure already FH wouldn’t have set the team out that way.
So true or Potter dare I say….
