Apparently we're looking for about £17m

That’s much, much better. Still cheap but I imagine that like Moder and Dahoud, he has been told to find another club. You simply can’t overcharge for players surplus to requirements.

The expected €50m for Billy and Deniz plus other sales should offset at least half of the expenditure this summer which has to be a good thing.

Yep, £18m probably plus add-ons seems decent if he’s been assessed as surplus to requirements. Probably Moder to go too, with a centre-back coming in and the lad coming in January. Sorted

I had in mind the figure of trying to rake in half what we spent.

The £8m for Pascal was to me unexpected and will also help us to this figure. I'm sure there will be a few more sundries with some of the younger players finally leaving us to the lower leagues, plus we might get a few million for Sima

I don't think Billy is surplus to requirements and I'm not really sure where this has come from. Only Pascal and Dunky made more appearances than Billy last season.

I think he wants to leave and there is interest. Napoli are a much bigger side than us and Antonio Conte is one of the greatest coaches of all time, it's a no brainer. He's got less than 2 years left on his contract so this is probably the moment to sell him for his peak value. If the club feel that's €20m then that would still be in our top ten sales of all time. No point in forcing him to stay in that sense, I know we've seen astronomical fees but this is still a big fee and profit on a player for the club.

Moder and Dahoud very clearly surplus however. Will be interesting to see how we can move them on...

This. Hopefully this talk is not at the Albion's instigation. If it is then there's a big danger of throwing the Billy out with the bathwater. WBG is, and will be, a class act, either here or elsewhere

I'll be sad to see him go. It's tricky for clubs when they're told by the manager that player X doesn't fit the system and should look for something else (I assume that's the case here).

My reading is that it is Albion instigated and totally hard nosed.

It looks very much like the manager does not see a role for him. His value is not going to increase if he is not playing, so a move away suits the club, it also suits the player when the alternative is watching your career go backwards.

This is a high risk strategy and for all this talk of numbers 4, 6, 8 and 10 I still don't really have a feel for how a Hurtzeler team should line up or play. You can't make an omellete without breaking eggs, but the same goes for getting egg on your face. This is shaping up for a death or glory season.

Af what point did we all become gaslit into being cheerleaders for the club's accountants? ???
I don't think that's what's happening. I see this as money in means we cn buy more players (perhaps once the losses on running the business have been partially mitigated).

We will see players some of us would rather keep start to move on, but that will generate the funds to buy better players. We can't keep them all sadly.

Gilmour, Moder, Dahoud, Undav, Sima out, plus the sale of Gross: ~£80m. Maybe Igor as well, who we'd probably get our initial investment back on.

Wieffer, Minteh, Hummels, Yalcouye, O'Riley, Gomez and Kadioglu in: ~£130m

I doubt it will totally go this way, but I think that would represent a very good window for us and a sensible level of investment in the squad given our last few sets of accounts.

I think people have watched a bit of Fab's tactical style and decided that our midfield will no longer be as reliant on a double pivot and Baleba is the most likely candidate for that third CB/CDM single pivot. Because of that they have come to the (IMO incorrect) conclusion that WBG doesn't fit us any more.

Looking at how we set up at QPR and the Japan tour, our midfield 2 has been Milner + 1 other (Ayari the standout so far). I think, had WBG not gone to the Euros, or been involved in the Napoli speculation, he'd have clearly have been the first choice in either of those positions in pre-season and an important part of the squad for the coming season.

Because of that, I just can't imagine there being a reason to his upcoming departure that is more than; he's been presented with an opportunity that he wants to take. I felt there'd be a couple of departures like this when RDZ went tbh. No Europe and a new coach with less of a pedigree than De Zerbi was obviously going to give a sense of instability within the squad and if the right offers came in, I'd expect them to leave. If it is just Undav, Gross and WBG from the players the club would've probably liked to have kept then I think the club have managed that worry very well.

Personally, I'd strongly suggest waiting to see how the first two EPL games - v Everton away and Man U at home - pan out before jumping to any hasty conclusions, squad-wise. These are both stern tests, albeit for completely different reasons.

Weekend's upcoming friendly won't offer up all that many new insights to new manager IMHO

The rumoured fee.

If Hürzeler wants to keep him, we’d surely want €30m - €40m like we are for Undav? I just can’t see that he is needed or wanted for €20m.

I also can’t see Hürzeler wanting a non-scoring, non-assisting midfielder unless he is the pivot. I think he has earmarked Wieffer or Baleba in that role. Possibly O’Riley or Gomez could play that role too being over 6ft.
