Planning to take a trip to Naples and surrounding areas
Main reason is to watch a game over there (likely to be next season now)
Has anyone been to Naples and what is the score regarding obtaining match tickets?
Also a tad worried about looking like a tourist in this area as the crime rate is always high so will probably have to slick back my hair and buy the gazetta dello sport each day to blend in with the locals

Take a bin bag.

LOL...or a box of matches to set fire to the rubbish - that way the blending in will be just fine.

I know it's the obvious one to say but Vesuvius is really impressive plus Pompeii. Great views looking down on the city when you drive back!

My everlasting memory of Naples was used syringes everywhere in the car park and rabid dogs running everywhere, and I almost died from heat exhaustion walking up Vesuvius. Pompeii is BRILLIANT though.

Try not to get mugged. Pass through on the train and you'll think you're in the slums of Manila or Rio in places. If Pompeii looks busy, go to Herculaneum instead.

Capri and Positano are also worth visiting. I found Herculaneum to be more impressive to visit then Pompeii as well

Been all over the world, some of the seediest places you can imagine. Only been pick pocketed once, in Naples.
I know it sounds obvious, but do not buy anything from a street vendor. If you have time, get a ferry over to Capri.
Go up to the back streets just for the experience. Watch out for for the scooters who will grab any bag you may be carrying though.
Look out for the shrines to Maradonna in the back streets higher above above the main shopping street.

Best pizza I've had in my life, Naples.

In keeping with the previous comments, I thought Naples itself was a pretty awful place, but if you get away from the city it is superb. As stated, Pompeii is a must, do the walk to the top of Vesuvius, the Amalfi coast is lovely, visits to Sorrento with the boat ride to Capri all well worth doing.

You should not be short of things to do and places to visit.

Used to work with a second generation Italian guy and his dad came from Naples. Even he classed it as a terrible place and hated visiting it to see his relatives.

Got a train from Rome to Pompeii when on honeymoon. Pompeii impressive, for some reason we managed to get on the wrong railway (not just wrong train!) - the "Circumvesuvia" which is a narrow gauge network there - to get back to Naples for the homeward journey . It took us back via some of the more "working class" suburbs shall we say - it was interesting that some of the stations had armed (as in sub machine gun) police on them.

Got back to a different station in Naples and had a short walk to the main line station during the Naples rush hour. Remember cars and scooters flying around in all directions, sometimes on the pavement as well!

as people have said above, take a trip to capri and if you get the time, arrange a boat trip( there are plenty of ferries) down the Amalfi Coast taking in positano. You can drive it, but parking is dreadful and also the viewws from the roads are nothing compared to the view from the sea.

naples is a bit of a dump to be fair and worth a look around , but nothing else.

Vesuvius and Pompeii are certainly worth the visit, as is herculaneum. Sorrento is Ok, but rammed in the middle of August!

I agree with many other NSCers, there is so much to see in the area. The bay of Naples and Amalfi coast areas are great. Would really recommend doing the spectacular coast road to Amalfi, Positano and up to Ravello. The views are fab especially if you can find a little cafe to kick back for a while and do a bit of people watching.

Public transport was generally good for trips to places around the Bay and thereby avoided driving (very wise!). A day trip Rome is do-able too.

Naples itself is another story. There is something alluring about a city that has an edgy atmosphere. A footie match could be an interesting experience but strongly suggest you would have to be ultra streetwise and keep one's time there to an absolute minimum.

The ruins at Pompeii are very interesting but found Herculaneum compact, more fully excavated and less crowded. However another couple in our party wandered just slightly off piste whilst in Herculaneum and were mugged twice within 200 metres. You hear the saying that 'Brighton looks like a city that ought to be helping Police with their enquiries' - well you can certainly say that about Naples! Wouldn't put me off visiting though.
