My day in 1977

Over there
Well, not entirely, but the year kept cropping up all day today. Piece on the radio this a.m about the queens jubilee in 77. My son was ill so I sat and watched star wars with him for the first time today. Explained to him I was the same age as him when it came out. The year? 77 of course. He bloody loved it...... of Course.
And just been watching top of pops 1977 show. As a side issue it was full of pop or disco pap, but then the Jam came on with " The City" and it was like a breath of fresh air. Was funny to see the audience denuded and frozen ad statues. With just 2 blokes pogoing along. It also had possibly the worst song I've ever heard, a young lady doing a duet with Mr punch called "that's the way to do it"
Any other old gets got memories of these days?

Hmmmm, I can remember there was a street party in our road for the Jubilee and I got a mug with the Queen's face imprinted in a mirror-style ink. The mug was filled with red-tinged popcorn I think. As for music, I don't remember the Sex Pistols at all, the only punk I remember is SLF from a couple of years later....and of course The Jam wouldn't release anything worth listening to for another three years :D But yes, I went to see 'Star Wars' at The Odeon in Brighton (a nice trip as I was living in Crawley at the time) and came out of the cinema doing all the lightsabre moves that would be expected of me :) And as for focusing on music, I was still a couple of years away from my first musical obsession (The Boomtown Rats, just after 'I Don't Like Mondays' was released) but I was already an ELO fan by then (age 7).

I was in the Spithead Review in 1977 on HMS Antrim and we got the order "Splice the Mainbrace" Which to you Civvy types means a Huge tot of Rum !!

Was it really all those years ago ???

Sherry's open for a lunchtime session (that was unusual back then, and pubs still closed from 2-30 til about 6.00) then made my way to Lower bev for a big party in the school field.

Think I managed to get back to Sherry's in the evening.

On the day of Silver Jubilee celebrations 1977 I was in Hull (I was a student at the uni at that time) attending the street party in my road, taking photos and enjoying the wonderful friendliness of those present. This weekend has taken me back to those memories. When we played Hull last season I took time out to visit my old digs. Some modernisation but still recognisable saddest bit was the loss of pubs. Almost ever street had a pub at the end of it in the 70's and just about the whole street would gather for a sing along at the end of the week...such togetherness...loved it.

For the '77 Jubilee, I was playing in a marching band in a huge procession in London that ended up in Windsor Park where the Queen lit one of the beacons across the country. We had also teamed up with the Sealed Knot and had provided music for one of their battle re-enactments earlier in the day. Met Prince Phillip at the end of day.

The Albion were slaughtering allcomers and Wardy broke the club goalscoring record. A wonderful year.
