My car HEATER is broken

With impeccable timing, just before winter, the heater in my motor appears to have packed up. The aircon is still fine, but when I want some WARMTH, I just get cold air coming out.* This is particularly annoying, as I quite look forward to a nice warm, drowsey drive to work in the mornings and home in the dark evenings, specially with a bit of music on. It often has me nearly nodding off, which is a lovely way to end the working day.

Could it be something SIMPLE like a fuse that needs replacing ? Or would that probably be NUFFIN to do with it, meaning I'll have to take it in and have someone completely dismantle the dash and rape my bottom through my wallet ?

*I have switched it off and on again.

I believe I saw a thread about how you'd bought a ROVER and what a great little bargain it was?

Expect your woes with this car to increase as the winter kicks in

In answer to your orginal question and bearing in mind I have no idea of the vagaries of Rover ownership I'd venture that it may be the thermostat being knackered? That's what is generally is when my equally reliable Alfas lose their heating abilities.

Controversially you could always get a mechanic to look at it ........ (I have a Rover too).

*Scratches top of head, puts head on one side followed by a sharp intake of breath and slow head movement from side to side and slowly expels breath*

Could be expensive Guv

Yes. Its blowing cold air even though I've got it turned to HOT
And the engine has been running PLENTY of time to heat up.

Did you not get one free with your stringbacks when you brought the car

OK, its a rover...

What engine?

If its a K series and the headgasket has failed, then could it be possible that the thermostat has failed on the cooling system.

A failed thermostat on my car usually manifests itself as the heaters not heating in the car, and K series rover engines (1.4, 1.6 (in some cases) and 1.8) are notorious for blowing their head gaskets)

Depending on the age of the car it could be the heater matrix is blocked. It's like a little radiator inside the car that cold air is blown through, heated and put into the interior. There are usually two types of fitment. The easy one is where it's removable in about five minutes from under the bonnet and then there's the naughty one, where it's buried deep under the dash and pound signs appear in the workshop receptionists eyes when you take it in. Good Luck

Wouldn't think it was the head gasket, as it would be boiling up and using lots of water?

Perhaps it is?

Does the heater knob turn very easily and did this happen suddenly? If so, it could be that the control cable has simply dropped of the back of the knob or at the other end where a flap deflects the air over the heater matrix. I can't remember whether you need to take the glove box out, but it could be very straight forward as it is a simple push fit. If you get stuck, I can probably dig out the service manual pages for this and send you a pdf.

Its not the head gasket. Everything is running normally, water temp gauge is exactly where it always is (in the middle). I have everything except interior HEAT.

Its a Rover 45, 1.6 engine.

Brrrrr.

The heater knob is turning normally, feels exactly the same, it doesn't feel like anything has come loose behind it. I'll have a dig around later, see if I'm missing something obvious.
