Having just about finished ripping all my CD's (yet to start on the vinyl) I notice some artists cropping up again and again in my collection. Nitin Sawhney for example seems to have really grabbed my attention for a period. He's a million miles off my favourite artist though.

Anyway, got me wondering if there's any artists I've 'completed' on. I certainly haven't on the above, or Yann Tiersen, who also crops up quite a lot. A quick look on Discogs tells me I'm fairly close on Four Tet, but not half as close as I thought on Fridge.

So I think I'm probably only 'complete' on The Books and Stimmhorn. This is by chance rather than design, as the output from both is pretty small. I'm not particularly a Completist myself.

Are you a music Completist? If so, what artists have you completed on? I'm talking albums here for simplicity.

My collection is truly ridiculous, ranging from lucifers friend and frumpy to Granicus and Dryewater onward to Tony Hazzard and Orchus Chylde … i always complete an artist or band unless they straddle two eras where I feel stylistically things go awry … 70s into 80s is a key one, usually a horrendous journey from excellent to utter shit inside two or three albums.

When the synth replaced the real for the most part I’m out, also the standard drum sound in the 80s was utterly horrific. We lost too much analogue beauty, and replaced it with a techno driven manufactured sound that to my ear remains truly awful.

Right I’m off to listen to some obscure scandi riff rock, probs Brutus tonight.

Nobody, but NOBODY, could ever accuse you of 'going on, and on, and on'

Ha - that even sounds like an If I could do it all over again… outtake title… brilliant, and probably deliberately so.

I’d sell the rest, but kudos on the above. I bet you don’t own them all though… come on, even the ‘reunion’ albums and the latter day live albums from back in the day ?

I think you’re trying to pull a cunning stunt, that and caravan are way too mainstream for you surely ?

Lol.

This probably says more about my musical knowledge, but I’ve genuinely never heard of any of those bands!

I think it says more about HWT's taste to be honest

I was quite disappointed to see one I've actually heard of. He's let himself down there, badly.

Looks like, taking out their live albums, I'm complete on The Cinematic Orchestra too.

I go through periods when I am slowly working towards increasing my collection of James Brown 45s, a crazy dream .
Luckily I have his biography with a discography that I tick off , it gets further complicated by duets, sidekicks and backing bands..

What is the definition of completist being used.

Original UK album only
Or including also
Reissues including bonus tracks
Anniversary editions
Versions on different labels
Overseas editions
Different coloured vinyl editions
Etc etc

Discography according to wiki should suffice

But I do pride myself on having a Portuguese import of Rattus Norvegicus

It would be like this with reggae artists I think. That's why my vinyl collection, which is 90% reggae will most likely have no completions at all.

Quite. Where do you begin and end? It's potentially endless.

For my bit of fun, I'm just seeing what discogs throws up on it's initial list, and not including compilations.

But then I have some albums that I've not found on discogs, even when trying all sorts in their very picky search.

I do buy reggae 45s as well , my latest in that field a very obscure Maytals Studio One ( Brooklyn press) Helpine Ages ( I've no idea either!) .. Cw Don Drummond Addis -Ababa. .

I couldn't imagine trying to buy every Gregory Isaacs 45 .

Or Dennis Brown for that matter!

You can see why both ended up setting up their own labels I suppose.
