Media mogul Rupert Murdoch says he could switch his support to David Cameron's Conservatives at the next General Election.
The news will come as a blow to Prime Minister Tony Blair, who sets great store by the support of Mr Murdoch's stable of British newspapers, including The Sun and The Times.
Mr Murdoch met Mr Cameron on a recent visit to the UK, and both the Tory and Labour leaders are expected to attend a global gathering of executives of his News Corporation empire in California next month.
Asked in an interview with the News Corp-owned The Australian newspaper, whether he could see himself backing Mr Cameron in the election expected in 2009 or 2010, he responded: "Oh, yes."
Mr Murdoch also issued a warning to Chancellor Gordon Brown not to call a snap election if he succeeds Mr Blair within the next couple of years.
Opinion polls have suggested voters would like to go to the polls soon after a handover of power.
But Mr Murdoch said the British public would be "cheated" by a rush to the polls. Mr Brown should leave at least 12 months before calling an election, to give voters a chance to compare him with Mr Cameron, he said.
Mr Murdoch told The Australian: "We've been a very big supporter of Tony on big issues, he's been a very courageous world leader. We've also been critical of him on other things like Europe.
"But for no reason other than the dynamics of British politics, we would like to see at least a year to 18 months stand-off between Gordon Brown and David Cameron so we can decide which of those most coincides with our views.
"Those two are going to decide the next election and I think the British public would be cheated if they only got a month or two's warning."

I love the bit where Mudock said - Mr ‘Tax the country to the hilt’ Brown should wait at least 12 months to give voters a chance two compare the two before calling an election, bloody laughed at that statement, Mr Brown is old Labour and is the reason why prisons haven’t been built, etc.
Goodbye Labour and good riddance, the liberal lefties will be banished from the political wilderness for ever, it took them 18 years to gain power and they’ve f***ed it up big time.
