Mugabe is only getting away with what a lot other politicians would love to get away with if they could. I include Bush in that. Fixing votes isn't the sole reserve of African dictators.

I agree completely, you're not wrong sadly. We complain about our politicians but when you look around the world you realise they are not as bad as they could be.

The UN should approve sanctions against the African nations that prop up Mugabe. I include South African in that

That would be a good idea. Lets destabalise one of the most democratic countires in the region.

What would you do to make South Africa more aware of their unique responsibility in this situation, Voroshilov?

As you know, we/Americans and probably even the UN can't really go in militarily, too much colonial baggage and other African countries wouldn't stand for it. It's the same principle the Germans are shit-scared these days of getting involved anywhere.

The Zimbabweans themselves need some help, and it's got to come from Africa, and the lead has to come from South Africa. They aren't stepping up to the plate for all sorts of political and commercial reasons, so how do you make them?

It's reached such a stage that part of me thinks if the African countries would rather stay hung up on perceived racism and colonialsm issues than actually do something about murder, torture and corruption, then f*** em, just let them get on with it, stop all aid. We can't help if they won't help themselves.

Mugabe is clearly MAD. He is of the same ilk as Hitler. Both were MAD. The same infrastructure is in place now as with the Nazi's in that most of the people know they were/are MAD but everyone is too scared to say so.

If white people intervene, then he will be supported even more because he was seen to overturn white supremacy. Whichever nation did that would also be painted as the nazis.

NOT that he's the only dictator in Africa either! Loads of countries on that continent are run by undemocratic leaderships, and I imagine they all protect themselves by violence and threats.
So, it's nothing new, just a shocker of high profile now.

Well TG, I know for one that I wouldn't start with sanctions against the South Africans because it would likely have the opposite effect. I think this is a carrot rather than a stick situation, we've got to encourage the anti-mugabe factions within ANC.

Even when he dies theres a whole infrastructure of military/police etc supporting his regime, who would not be in a very good position if they allowed anyone else to come in. And so won't. Mugabe is 85 or so now isn't he?

It's difficult for any government that is considered prominantly white to get directly involved. Bearing in mind the way that whites exploited the Africans they have no great reason to trust us. Sadly it's people like Mugabe who exploit that sorry fact.

Israel is the most democratic country in the Middle East. Would you support actions against Israel for their wrongs in that region?

I don't accept that as a valid comparison. You can't compare the occupation and illegal Settlements of the West Bank with the South Africa's failure to deal with Mugabe in stronger terms.

Agreed, it's a stupid idea. South Africa is a democracy and has its own reasons for its stance on Zimbabwe. It's as pathetic on the USA trying to impose sanctions on any country trading with Cuba just because the USA has an issue with them.

And any case, I don't recall various major European powers stepping in during the Balkans conflict. Should we have imposed sanctions on Italy or Greece then?

However not all Africans roll over so easily...

Cosatu vows to 'harm' Zimbabwe rulers

It's only the trade union movement in Zimbabwe and South Africa that are trying to stand up to Mugabe.

The trade union that represents the South African dock workers refused to agree to unload arms destined for Zimbabwe from China a few weeks back.

However, most trade union leaders in Zimbabwe have either been murdered, locked up or are on the run now.

I attended a demonstration outside the SA embassy on the Strand last week with other trade unionists to protest against Mugabe's treatment of trade union leaders - trouble is only UN intervention will remove this man and there are too many UN members who will not move against the regime.

I think we need a two pronged plan to get the authorities to sort out Mugabe.

1. Shell (or similar) start drilling in SA, somewhere near the boarder, and announce that they believe they have found readings which suggest there could be large reserves of untapped oil over the boarder in Zimbabwe and make an official request to start drilling.

2. We, the people, Joe Public, start spreading a rumour that the reason the US/UK military failed to find any WMD's in Iraq was because Saddam had them moved at the last minute to his secret bunker on the outskirts of Harare.

I tell ya, the troops will be in there faster than an Uncle S surefire tip can tail off at the back of the field. Bobby Mugabe will be swinging from the rafters, in time to be cut down with the Christmas decs.

well, once you get past the Daily Moan style of the first few paragraphs it settles down into a more informative piece that doesnt entirely reflect the headline, with some voices against him.

however, just remember the light touch next time you hear "oil" in the same sentance as Zimbabwe, we are not there militarily because the other african nations wont allow it, end of.
the other african nations couldnt do a f***ing thing about it if we wanted to be there militarily.
