Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has resigned, parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda says.
A letter from Mr Mugabe said the decision was voluntary, Reuters news agency reports.
The surprise announcement came as lawmakers debated an impeachment motion against Mr Mugabe in a joint sitting of parliament.
Mr Mugabe had previously refused to resign despite last week's military takeover, and days of protests.
He has been in power since independence in 1980.

I weas wondering that too. One of the few relatively unbiased newspapers without right wing leanings out there. .

It's a shame it has taken this long - but suddenly a great time to be young in Zimbabwe - the future is bright for a very educated African nation.

A great time to be young in Zimbabwe? I'm not sure l would go as far as to say that. Mugabe has gone, and that's great, but it will take an awful lot to rid the nation of years of corruption, and get the economy working again.
