As useless as rubber lips on a woodpecker.

Actually the green woodpecker does not drum its beak, so rubber lips would be no hindrance.

If you float on the Stock Exchange - with all the benefits that brings in terms of cash into the club - you have to accept that someone may want to buy a majority shareholding. They can't have it both ways.

If they wanted to protest they should have protested at becoming a plc.
 Exactly what I was thinking this morning, Lush. I don't remember too many howls of complaints when Taggart was buying the likes of RvN for a fee that nobody else could possibly compete with.

I'm not particularly anti Man U, but I 100% agree with you.

The thing is, situations like this with big clubs, people sit up and take notice. it gets publicity

there have been two MP,s calling for an investigation (both live knowhere near manchester!)

at the end of the day as Lush said it,s a PLC,

I do feel slightly sorry for them, not sure if I could ever bring myself to go on a march in protest to save them though.

They really didn't think things through before they decided to become a plc. Although it's a great way of getting outsiders to contribute to the coffers it's also a guaranteed way of losing control. This may not happen at the start but, as shareholders sell up to realise a profit (that's what they're in it for, after all) then these shares often end up in the 'wrong' hands.

Also, there's nothing to stop one plc being taken over by another. This happens all the time as one (failing) company takes over a more successful one and uses their profits as a cash-cow to ensure their own survival. All it needs for this to happen is for the shareholders to be more interested in making a quick buck than looking to the longer term. With Man U they seem to have just these ingredients with Magnier and McManus holding a huge percentage of the shares and having no long term interest in the club.

As for Glazer's motives, it seems that he's certainly looking to have Man U bail him out of his current financial situation - but he's also probably looking toward a time in the not-so-distant future when all clubs will be able to negotiate their own deals with the TV companies. When this happens then the Man U brand will be one of the most highly prized and will attract a huge premium. Then the money will really roll in - and none of it will make it back to the club unless Glazer wants it to!

How to get out of this situation? Well, they could institute a share buy-back and take themselves private again. Richard Branson did this several years ago when his Virgin Group didn't perform as well as he'd thought - but it cost him a lot in fees. If Man U did this then they'd probably have a real debt problem as a result - they may even have to go into receivership. Whatever happens they've got nobody to blame but themselves. They chose to go public and now they're feeling the backlash.

I find it hard to sympathise with the Man Utd fans as they are hardly generous in helping others.
I seem to recall when Bury were in real trouble and took the begging buckets to grounds in order to survive the Old Trafford faithful donated a pitifull amount compared to other clubs.

To be fair, a bucket full of Norwegian Krone and Irish Punts and whatever they spend in other Man Utd strongholds such as Bristol is not what Bury would have needed.
