[Sussex] Moving to Worthing

I actually really like Worthing, my son moved there a couple of years ago. He lives a 10 min walk away from Worthing Pier. I go over there on Sundays but the town centre seems quite chilled. Even the homeless person by Tesco Express reads a book rather than being p**sed and aggressively begging. There's some nice pubs and restaurants. Worthing Beach is nice and not covered in litter. I get the 700 Coastliner back into Brighton which feels like it takes forever but I'm not a fan of the train & the route is pleasant. Get off the bus at North Street Brighton at 10pm Sunday & it feels like you've arrived on another planet. Nice clean Worthing, stepping through sick and litter in Brighton & watching fights kick off. I don't think Worthing deserves the reputation it's got, it doesn't seem a s**t hole compared to Brighton.

Looking for a quieter way of life, I work in portslade , no car so bit concerned over that and too and from Amex is another downfall , but house prices in East Sussex are now out of reach

My guess is Newhaven has cheaper house prices than Worthing

We moved here (Tarring) 20 months ago.
It has been great so far and there are great pubs, restaurants and cafes all over the town. It’s definitely on the up - as is the football team!
We’ve even dumped both tories out of the town now.
The only downside is that after all this time, we still haven’t found an Indian or Chinese takeaway that really hits the mark. Chip shops are a bit hit and miss, too.
If you’re relying on public transport to get to the Amex, it’s not great, as others have said, for evening games. We generally drive to the racecourse and it doesn’t usually take as long as we expect it to.

Is Old Nick’s by Jacob’s ladder still going? That was where we always went when I grew up in Tarring (over several decades).

Only other chippy in the area I could think of was Highlights on South Farm Rd, that famously did deep fried mars bars..

For a curry I would recommend The Taste of Bengal at the top of Heene Road, good Chinese is Happy Valley in South Street and a good, great value chippy is... Mr Chippy opposite the south side of West Worthing Station...hope this helps!

Golden China in Goring is good. Before we moved further west, the Golden Bowl in Broadwater was also good.

As for chip shops, chips inc in Goring is very good and the chippy up by the John Selden was also decent.

I’ve lived in Tarring for 33 years.
Taste of Bengal is probably the longest running Indian take away in Worthing. Certainly been there since 1983 I think.
25 mins by car to Mill road on a Saturday, then get bus to ground.

I've not thought about Highlights for a long time! That was our local chippy when I was a kid. They had an arcade machine in there with Sensible Soccer on it. Nice owners too.

You mentioned being in Lewes 3 days a week, it’s 11 minutes on the train, Falmer is approximately 20 minutes.

I like Worthing a lot.

As others have said, it's improved greatly - almost certainly the ripple effect from Brighton - and still feels to be on a gentle upward trajectory.

It's never going to be Brighton, clearly, but there's plenty of good options for food and drink, although not too much in the way of fine dining if that is important to you.

From Tarring, you could be in the centre of Brighton in a little over half an hour - that's probably quicker than some who live on the outskirts of Brighton itself.

Didn’t realise so many were local to Tarring. Another one here. You’ll be fine for work - Football I wouldn’t take the train as it can be a bit hit and miss although that is probably just personal preference. Always go to Mill Road and then park and ride it.

We really enjoy it here. Moved back to Worthing from Burgess Hill for house price reasons 4 years ago and haven’t regretted it at all.

A few years ago we looked at a 5 storey house in a square near the front which needed a full refurb can’t remember the name of it. The deal wasn’t great and I remember a group downing special brew in the square, not what you want to look at whilst eating your cornflakes.

You can do a lot worse than Tarring. Nice area, grew up there as a lad. I think the Vine and George and Dragon are still there. Anyone one on here remember the Vine when Larry and Eileen used to run it?
