Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has ruled out ever signing David Beckham or any of Real Madrid's other "Galacticos".

Beckham reportedly told Chelsea last summer he wanted to join them at the end of this season.

But Mourinho said: "All you need is a strong group of players - you don't need a Hollywood star.

"What the devil is a Galactico anyway? The image comes from the social lives, and fame the players have achieved. It is those Galacticos that I distrust."

Mourinho, speaking in the News of the World, added: "My doubt about them does not concern their ability but what surrounds them and makes their performances inconsistent."

The Chelsea manager has made it clear he favours youngsters who crave success rather than big-name players known for their ostentatious displays of wealth.

Beckham has made headlines on the front pages as often as the back ones and, at the age of 29, he does not fit that profile.

Mourinho's transfer policy, which has been backed by club owner Roman Abramovich, served him well at Porto, where he won the Champions League last season.

The Blues boss - whose team are 11 points clear at the top of the Premiership - added: "I prefer players like Paulo Ferreira and Didier Drogba.

"I have an expensive car, but I don't make a collection. I don't have a taste for having 10 cars."

I want to dislike Mourinho but the guy gets the results that make his arrogance acceptable.

If only that Ostrich Sven had the vision of Mourinho, we would have seen Sean Wright Phillips, with experience under his belt having taken over from the now past it Beckham, and a team that stood at least a small chance of lifting the World Cup. As it is with Sven in charge, we have no chance

And also the fact that we are not very good.

A strike force of Owen (regular bench warmer at Madrid), and Rooney (scorer of 5 premiership goals this season no less, and whilst great to watch in an England shirt is highly unlikely to survive a major competition without being suspended). After that we have very little up front (Heskey, Vassell, Beattie, JOHNSON?).

A midfield which has no width and no natural left sided player. Gary Neville. And a reasonable but not yet convincing keeper.

.

McGhee has shown that it is possible to make average players play above themselves. Sven specialises in getting our best players to underachieve, Rooney was an exciting blip, maybe Sven hadn't had time to bore him into mediocrity :)

Greece weren't very good either but they were good enough to win the last big one.

In the last few England games I watched, I thought Gary Neville was quite good ???

I don't know where he would go. I can't see Man U having him back, Chelsea have said no and the Highbury pitch is probably too narrow for his crosses.

Liverpool or Newcastle ?

true. id say he's one of Englands most reliable players. But he's a twat, and people confuse him for his footballing deficient brother.

The problem with England under Sven is all too often he picks the "best" 11, without any thought to tactics. If your going to play 4 midfielders then at leat one has to be left footed. If Beckham/Lampard/Gerard had to fight for their place you'd see much better performances.

wont be playing at highbury for much longer though.

and what was previously said about width in the england team. we could quite easily field a team with wright-phillips and downing on either wing. nice and wide!

We'll be one of the favourites at Germany next year, and that's because we have one of the best teams in the world. Rooney has not been on top-form, but is a class act & Sven's system seems to suit him. Downing is a very real solution to our left midfield problem. And in all area's we have at least one genuine back-up. PLayers like Defore, Butt, Terry, Kirkland, Woodgate, Bridge & Wright-Phillips are all excellent back-ups while the team would be:

Robinson,
Neville, Ferdinand, Campbell, Cole
Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Downing
Rooney, Owen
