Do motorway service areas stay open during the night. I am going to Devon in May but will be driving during the night and want to be able to stop the odd time for a cup of coffee.

i think most of them do but for example at the one near j2 eastbound on M27, at night it only serves manky coffee in the restaurant, the Costa inside it is closed

Most are open but not most of the cafes - the main restuarants normally are but as above manky coffee.

Yes but the main catering outlets close. There are Costa coffee machines which are ok to drink if you desperately need a hot drink.

We used to travel overnight when taking our caravan from Yorkshire down to Devon.

Remember coming home from Chester after the live sky night time game we had up there, 15 of us in a minibus on the way home after a swift half in Chester after the game, suddenly the rain starts to piss down, on go the wipers and would they work? would they heck... The rain continued to fall and we had to pull over and spend the early hours in a service station waiting for a nice AA man and the only place to get a drink was a machine and the tea was disgusting, cannot comment on the coffee as I do not drink it.

Yes and some of the shops which will have cold drinks/sandwiches in their chiller cabinets.

There is a superb caravan in a layby on the A30 before Plymouth that does a lovely bacon buttie early in the morning.
