I've been hit by 2 similar viruses in 3 days - both tellingme that my machine is infected and that to clear it i need to buy this anti-virus software. Needless to say it incapacitates my usual anti-virus stuff so i canot use that, and locks down everything on my machine (using my netbook now).

twice in a 3 days is a little excessive - the 2nd time i wasn't even looking at porn. Anyone else had problems?

Start by downloading either Malwarebytes or IObit from Downlod.com, watch what the latter tries to delete though as it is very aggressive. Also, which A/V are you currently using ?

RKill.exe is a fantastic thing to end all processes that are related to Malware while you fix it, which will allow Malwarebytes (doing a full scan and deleting/repairing everything found) to do its work. You may find that your webbrowsers direct you to fake sites. To fix this you'll need to edit your HOSTS file located at (from memory so it might be a little wrong)

C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/Etc/Hosts

Open it in notepad, delete all the enteries relating to google/yahoo etc. That should prevent reinfection through fake google sites (it relates the domain google.co.uk to an IP address that isn't the usual google adress).

These are the steps i take, works every time.

What are you downloading and then not checking for viruses? I do most of the things that should get me viruses but by being sensible ive not had one in about 8 years.

Virii are far less common these days. Malware and Adware that gets installed and infects yoru computer without having to actually run an exe are the new weapon of choice.

Thing is, an .exe can be undone with system restore, picked up with an Anti-Virus (most have real time scanning of all incomming files) and common sense can apply (don't download torrents that have got comments of a virus). Malware can actually infect yoru computer without you knowing. Making it far more dangourous however the most common i've come across are nag files that want you to buy an antivirus and are generally VERY pissy and shitty.

The free versions of Avast and Avira are sound. Comodo gives you full internet secuirty and I run it on a bridge PC. This machine uses the Microsoft AV and that seems to be good too.

Have switched to Comodo just recently (firewall only) and happy with it - also would recommend free version of Avast, along with Spybot Search & Destroy.
