I see that Brighton bus drivers are balloting over whether to take strike action. I imagine if that coincided with a train strike, it would make things even trickier.

And if they did vote for a strike (and that's by no means certain), would such action affect Park & Ride buses too?
Ballot closes on September 12th.

Looks like I have about a month to buy a car

Broken Britain.

Of course they're not - yet.

That's the narrative they want you to think, so you turn against the strikers.

This is how extreme things are.

The country is on its knees, purely down to the corruption and greed of this government.

Have you seen that inter-departmental government fraud is £21bn under Sunak. Where do you think this money is disappearing to? FFS. In France, there would be riots for this reason alone, despite the other hundreds they could be using.

Even Stevie Wonder can see what's going on.

They will only act when it starts to affect them...
It’s both isn’t it? We’ve got the worst government ever. But drivers on 60k stopping people on minimum wage getting to work or making working people pay £20 extra for a coach to football isn’t a good look. And it will be used against the Unions and Labour in the GE Campaign and Sun / Mail readers will lap it up as usual.

I agree, that was a big mistake. I don’t think it would be over however, as the T & Cs would never have been accepted. The government need to sit down again and show that they actively want to solve it, as do the unions. I just don’t understand how the companies and operators, that don’t have to deal with central government have found a solution, which isn’t workable for those that do.

You may well be right, but we will never know, plus if it was close to be accepted a little tweak here and there could have seen a deal being found.

If the companies want to pay off staff, im not sure T&Cs will really protect them much?

I dislike both sides equally, both have no intention to talk, the Government dragged their feet, but they shouldn't be giving in to all the wage demands - there is zero give on either side.

When the adults decide to enter the room on both sides, we might get somewhere.

It's clearly the poorest being affected at the moment, the unions are desperate to suggest it isn't, but that is why they are losing support.

It’s not a bad walk from Lewes for anyone able. About an hour.
Yes. I've done it a fair few times. Fine if you're able/weather ok. Most direct route though is mostly alongside the A27 - although you could go via the south downs way but that takes a bit longer , more hills. - You're likely to for a 3pm get to Lewes before 6pm.

Walking to North Chailey mind is a bit much. Although i've ran it a couple of times. (its about 10/11 miles).

Yep, easy along the cycle path if you want the quickest route, it’s less than 4m from The Swan to the prison. I’ve run from Burgess Hill a few times, also about 10.5m

I think you need to have experienced the 74-79 government to be considered qualified to label any govt as the worst ever..... those really were dark days.

Working practices have always evolved- and will continue to evolve over time - that's life.
Would a new contract even stop job loss? It seems if they really wanted to there is a way around it.

Few examples during and just after covid that spring to mind of unionised employees been fired and rehired to get round it.

I think the problem the rail workers have with their strike action is that the general public are so used to rail services not running or being disrupted, that they simply roll their eyes and carry on with their alternative transport arrangements.

The worker’s uppity bullshit has been going on for well over ten years now. Give a f***.

As for commuters, I imagine the combination of price hikes, appalling service, overtime strikes, national strikes etc that they probably lost all sympathy for the rail workers years ago.

I don’t really care much for the rail workers plight. They’re well paid and many of their jobs are obsolete. Judging by the performance most of them put in at work, I’d rather deal with a touch screen than one of those surly bastards on the trains or in the station.

As for the bus drivers, they refused a 10% pay rise, taking their salary up to £38.5k a year. Following a 10.5% pay rise they were given in June 2022!!!!

Utter lunacy that they are considering strike action.

Everyone jumping on the bandwagon.

For sure, most of the working practices have evolved with the drivers (like the ATO project on the Thameslink core). But the suggestion that they’d be behind making trains completely driverless is a bizarre one as it would put them out of a job. Driverless trains on the UK heavy rail network is at least 30-50 years away anyway so there’s not a lot of point about that being in the debate.

That's unfair... the staff in Brighton Station ticket office are very helpful. I've regularly witnessed them researching for and advising elderly travellers who just can't fathom the ticket machines or the best way to get to a destination. They also are unfailingly patient with the huge number of confused foreign tourists and students who need assistance. In my personal experience one of them gave me excellent advice on saving money on my regular trips to London; using a machine this option would not have presented itself. Closing ticket offices at major stations like Brighton is a travesty and a continuation of the profit over people rail company motivation since privatisation.

Great post! :clap2:

The rail unions are the last bastion of defence for what remains of this once-public service. Because make no mistake, once all these ticket offices have been converted into twee little coffeee bars, they're gone forever
