I wondered that but it seems he didn't. He was investigated by the Australian Secret Service when he was on tour there; they were very suspicious of his political activities.
He's probably the dodgiest individual to captain England

You may have been there when I was told to move from behind the bowlers arm then. Happened by the sight screen at the other end too. Mind you, the best thing we did as kids was move Sylvester Clarke's bowling marker to try and get him to no ball. Didn't work, he tool 6 wickets that innings.
I'm not sure whether Monty Panesar will be knocking on a thousand doors, but he will be knocking on the same door a thousand times

To be fair to Gilligan, being a member of the British Facists in the mid 20s wouldn't have had anything like the connotations it does now (or only about 10years later for that matter).
There's a few who've attracted significantly more in the way of criticism for their political careers or views, albeit those don't generally overlap with actually being England captain. I just had a quick flick through the list* and only the second man on it, Lord Harris, has this in his Wikipedia page:
"When Harris left India, having virtually ignored famine, riots and sectarian unrest, a publisher circulated a collection of newspaper extracts from his time as governor. The introduction stated:
'Never during the last hundred years has a Governor of Bombay been so sternly criticised and never has he met with such widespread unpopularity on account of his administration as Lord Harris.'"
Anyway, more cheerfully and notwithstanding any politics, Arthur and Harold Gilligan are the only brothers to have both captained England.
*The most surprising thing I found was that James Tredwell somehow managed to captain England in a T20i, albeit one in which only 2 balls were bowled.

I don't know that about Harris. I think Lord Hawker had a bit of a reputation too. And thinking about it, Monty Bowden came to a sticky end while smuggling whisky. He was buried in a coffin made of whisky cases. Both Percy Chapman and Walter Hammond were shrouded in scandal: Chapman with booze and Hammond with shagging.
Even the great WG was prone to a bit of gamesmanship.

What are the demographics of Southall?
Specifically what is it about the demographics, that would lead you to think the electorate would vote for clueless British-Punjabi Monty Panesar, over the experienced sitting MP, British-Punjabi Virendra Sharma?
I just looked, and it turns out it's the most Sikh constituency in Britain at "over 20%" (According to Wikipedia).
That said, given that at the last three elections Sharma's received 60.8, 70.3 and 65% of the vote, I think every single one of those Sikhs could vote for Panesar and he'd still not win. Clearly, they won't.

Personal opinion is that potential MPs should do a few tests before being allowed to stand for election. They also need to accept they should be responsible for their actions and that lying would be punishable with a prison sentence.
Was on Sky News just before 8 and said he still aims to play cricket for England
