Just far enough away from LDC
We have a winner. He also stood for the Conservatives in Bolsover - I'd say the definition of a lost cause in the early 60s (although Bolsover does have a Tory MP now, quite incredibly)
And also in leicester in a by election

Arthur Gilligan was 'politically active', did he not stand?
I wondered that but it seems he didn't. He was investigated by the Australian Secret Service when he was on tour there; they were very suspicious of his political activities.

He's probably the dodgiest individual to captain England

He definitely had a stand, I sat in it many times 45 odd years back.
You may have been there when I was told to move from behind the bowlers arm then. Happened by the sight screen at the other end too. Mind you, the best thing we did as kids was move Sylvester Clarke's bowling marker to try and get him to no ball. Didn't work, he tool 6 wickets that innings.

I'm not sure whether Monty Panesar will be knocking on a thousand doors, but he will be knocking on the same door a thousand times

Monty Panesar is going to stand for Parliament for Gorgeous George's Workers Party. Good luck cracking the 16,000 Labour majority in Southall.
given the demographics of Southall, i reckon he's in with a strong shout.

To be fair to Gilligan, being a member of the British Facists in the mid 20s wouldn't have had anything like the connotations it does now (or only about 10years later for that matter).

There's a few who've attracted significantly more in the way of criticism for their political careers or views, albeit those don't generally overlap with actually being England captain. I just had a quick flick through the list* and only the second man on it, Lord Harris, has this in his Wikipedia page:

"When Harris left India, having virtually ignored famine, riots and sectarian unrest, a publisher circulated a collection of newspaper extracts from his time as governor. The introduction stated:
'Never during the last hundred years has a Governor of Bombay been so sternly criticised and never has he met with such widespread unpopularity on account of his administration as Lord Harris.'"

Anyway, more cheerfully and notwithstanding any politics, Arthur and Harold Gilligan are the only brothers to have both captained England.

*The most surprising thing I found was that James Tredwell somehow managed to captain England in a T20i, albeit one in which only 2 balls were bowled.

I don't know that about Harris. I think Lord Hawker had a bit of a reputation too. And thinking about it, Monty Bowden came to a sticky end while smuggling whisky. He was buried in a coffin made of whisky cases. Both Percy Chapman and Walter Hammond were shrouded in scandal: Chapman with booze and Hammond with shagging.

Even the great WG was prone to a bit of gamesmanship.

There have been quite a a few wrong uns captaining England (and we haven't even mentioned KP)

I wasn't familier with Monty Bowden. I do love the understatement you get in cricketers biographies:

"Officially he died of epilepsy, although a fall from his cart, leading him to be trampled under the hooves of his own oxen contributed to his death."

Pressed to explain the pledge, Mr Panesar said Nato was there "to protect the European Union" and that withdrawal could be "the next stage" of Brexit.

"I think the reason they're saying that, the reason our party is saying it [withdraw from Nato] is because we don't really have control on our borders, right? We have illegal migration,” he said.

“And then what ends up happening is some of these illegal migrants that go into the more poorer, deprived areas, and then the resources get strained in them areas.”

Nato is a US-led military alliance that forms the bedrock of European defence, based on the principle that an attack on one member would be an attack on all.

It has nothing to do with questions of migration, and its importance has been stressed anew by the UK and others since Vladimir Putin launched Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which wants strongly to join Nato.

One notable critic remains Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who accuses European members of freeloading on US military spending and has threatened in the past to pull the United States out of the alliance.

Mr Panesar said: "I don't know what American stance would be on this as well. Like if Donald Trump wins the elections there, he may not be in favour of Nato either.

“And we've done Brexit, a lot of people in our country have voted for Brexit. And now they maybe feel the next stage is to remove from Nato."Announcing his candidacy on Tuesday, the retired cricketer said he was “not an expert on foreign policy”

What are the demographics of Southall?

Specifically what is it about the demographics, that would lead you to think the electorate would vote for clueless British-Punjabi Monty Panesar, over the experienced sitting MP, British-Punjabi Virendra Sharma?

I just looked, and it turns out it's the most Sikh constituency in Britain at "over 20%" (According to Wikipedia).
That said, given that at the last three elections Sharma's received 60.8, 70.3 and 65% of the vote, I think every single one of those Sikhs could vote for Panesar and he'd still not win. Clearly, they won't.

I think it's valid at this point to draw attention to the time he appeared on Celebrity Mastermind.

I would say its astounding that he has been selected but then reality switched in.

Personal opinion is that potential MPs should do a few tests before being allowed to stand for election. They also need to accept they should be responsible for their actions and that lying would be punishable with a prison sentence.

That looked like it was a more painful experience for him than trying to hold up the tail, while facing the best fast-bowlers in test cricket.

Who – if anyone – is advising him or briefing him? Does he ACTUALLY know what's he's got himself into? That was absolutely awful!
