Funny that they call it 'Leyton Orient Goal' rather the official 'Own Goal' it has been classed as

Objectively, I don't think Mitoma has a chance of winning that.

What I noticed watching it back, though, was the assist for the assist from Caicedo. If he doesn't fall down like a sack of spuds, instead of the ball coming off his back, it goes to Gusto who, one assumes, would hoof it away. Thanks Agent Moises :lolol:

That’s not the test in law though according to Walton

I was curious about this, and dubious that football.london was a fully impartial source... Looking it up, using ChatGBT (so hallucinations not impossible), Walton appears to be speaking bollocks.

"IFAB changed this rule in 2021: If an accidental handball occurs but the player does not immediately score or assist a goal, play continues."

Specifically only if Lamptey had either scored directly or directly assisted the goal would it have been called back, even with VAR.

I’ve heard a few ‘expert’ refs (or ex refs) over the last few days talk about it…..pretty telling that there’s no consistent answer.

Exactly.

If Lamptey had scored following that handball then yes, accidental or not, by the current laws it should be ruled out.

But Lamptey didn't score, and Chelsea still had chances to clear before Rutter floated it to Mitoma for the goal. It was the correct interpretation, laws were applied properly.

PS: Veltman was also bang to rights for that dopey handball Everton pen, so I'm not entirely myopic.
