It will be viewed with the same disgust and disbelief as spousal abuse.
At some time in the future you may become a parent and, like so many before, realise just what a tough job it is and how all those things that 'parents' have done wrong before you and that you can do so much better turn out to be not so far off the mark after all.
That's how it turned out for me and now I see my kids and other family members who 'knew so much' having to come to terms with the reality of parenting.
Ok, the ideal is that you should never have to resort to smacking. Anything more than the occasional smack is a failure anyway. But, the deterent must be there. It's there in nature, it's there in politics, it's there in the real world.
Bringing up kids can be a battle of wills. Kids will always try to stretch the limits. There's a local 'Brat Camp' story of a mother & daughter in Bognor, the mother has spoilt the kid rotton, and that's how it is for so many kids now.
My kids were good kids and have grown into good adults. Tone of voice was nearly always enough. I remember my mum always had her wooden spoon, enough to keep us in check, and there was always "Wait 'til your father gets home...."
If smacking was made illeagal then would we get cases where kids got their own back by reporting parents who would then find the rug pulled from under them in regards to disipline? Could we also see kids put into homes and parents into prison and just who would that benefit?
There's disiplne and there's abuse. The need is recognising the difference and dealing with the abusers.
I think the argument "You don't know what it's like to be a parent etc" has been used and discarded by now.I'm not married but I knowe I will never hit my future wife. I don't own a dog but I know I would never kick it if I did.
I have never been a drink driver but my opinion on drink drivers is valid. I have never murdered anyone but my opinion on murderers is valid. Yet somehow my opinion on hitting children is invalid. That argument is tired, it is irrelevant and it is, to be honest, quite lame.
I promise you, in the future, hitting children will be viewed with the dis-taste it so badly deserves.
absolute tosh......but I respect your right to believe such tosh
I knew everything once
I promise you, in the future, hitting children will be viewed with the dis-taste it so badly deserves.
Which part do you believe to be tosh? It comes as no shock that the people who come across as the most patronising on these threads are also the ones who advocate corporal punishment.
Just remember that if you get picked on by a couple of chavs on your way home one night Nibble, What you gonna do if you did? Give em a whack or look for a naughty step to sit them on?
