Well he was on SCR (Thorpe that is) just after this evenings postponement and he said that the forecast was rising temperatures for this evening and therefore he couldn't see a further problems arising.

But, at 5pm the temperature plummeted and he carried out a further inspection and off it was. He also made a passing reference that the stands and slopes for the spectators were in an icy condition too.

so, the culprits in this are the met office who have proven to be useless once again.

TBF its always difficult for a ref to tell. If he'd have called it off at 2 and someone saw the pitch in a playable condition tonight, we'd all have been moaning that it should be on... I see your point though.

Better at 6pm than at 7:45pm though. Not perfect. However the club DID know there was a chance of postponement last night.

I disagree. It's the ref's responsibilty. Too often these officials do not use common sense. The weather all afternoon was detoriating even on the coast. There was a high probabilty that parts of the pitch would refreeze and more importantly the stand and walkways particulary at the South stand would become dangerous. He should have erred on the cautious side and stopped the match before staff and supporters started to travel. That means calling it off by 3.00.

If it had warmed up yet he had cancelled early so what? A few moans but folk would have not have spent unnecessary time and money and the club could have saved on staffing and other costs.

Surely that was just someone's OPINION though. They should have just checked the weather forecast for the real facts of the matter.

I'm sure somebody with real contacts will kindly provide the club with the link.

Sorry but he's a ref not a weather forecaster. I've been checking the weather for most of the day too and certainly the BBC were forecasting rising temperatures this evening (and have been for most of the week) and if Thorpe is going by the same data then he is going to make that decision.

Oh and Badger, hindsight is a wonderful thing - I'm sure you can give us a spot on prediction for the weather tomorrow night can't you.

Hang on - its been fecking freezing cold all day. By 3.30-4pm the sun has usually set and we are pretty much in darkness. How, in the name of ALL that is holy, was the f***ing temperature going to go UP as the evening kickoff approached ?

Sorry, but 2.30 was a bone-headed time for an inspection (something I alluded to on another thread with Hans Kraay this afternoon). The temperature was ALWAYS going to drop sharply once the sun went down. Thats not hindsight, its common f***ing sense. The inspection should have been at around 4pm when the ground was in darkness. Then a proper decision could have been reached, and a lot of wasted journies saved.

IDIOTIC.

According to the stewards who came in to the Brewery Tap post-postponement, the problem was as much to do with the running track as the pitch. It just stayed slippy, despite being zapped with salt and grit and shit.

For the simple reason that the forecasters were expecting cloud cover coming in from the south west. In general weather that comes from that direction is usually warmer if a bit wetter, particularly where wind and breezes are concerned. Lose the east wind and you lose the wind chill factor and that immediately raises temperatures.

Having been outside this morning at 7.30 and again 12 hours later walking up to Withdean I can categorically state I felt a damn site warmer this evening.

Albion's League One game against Gillingham at Withdean has been postponed. The game was called off at 6pm by match referee Mike Thorpe because of a frozen pitch with air temperatures plummeting. The pitch had already passed one inspection, but conditions worsened later in the afternoon.

What - plummetting air temperatures - on a DECEMBER evening ? Well, I suppose with these FREAK weather conditions, its all too easy to get caught out, isn't it.

Oh come on T of T. Its been absolutely Pearl Harbour all week, and the one thing it DOESN'T feel liken as the evenings draw in is warmer. That 2.30 inspection time looked like a nonsense, and so it has turned out. It was only ever going to get colder as it got darker, I can't believe we're even arguing the point.
