What I want to know is how they start? If I was in a packed stadium and decided to start a mexican wave, or even if I was with a mate and we both suddenley stand up waving our arms in the air, surely other people surrounding us are just going to think we're crazy, rather than join in?? So how do they start?

Some idiot and his mates start counting down from ten to one and when they get to one they leap up. They do this a few times and after a few attempts the whole block has cottoned on and it has begun.

Either that or the rest of the block smacks the little turds upside the head.

What this thread needs is for one of the more mathematically gifted posters to produce an equation capturing the wave.

For origination, size and speed (and continuous flow) it is going to be some function of stadium size, number of neutrals, how good a game it is, whether England are playing, country of tournament etc.

There must be an Einstein out there.

I usually put 'Mexican Wave Starting' down as a teenage boy type activity but I am afraid to say on Sunday it was a bunch of grown men who really should have known better.

Do you remember the first game at Withdean, when those eerrrrrrrrrrr...... DJ's(?), tried to get the ground to do a 'wave'. Same response as above. Total misunderstanding of 'fans'.

Who went to the Wolves away game last season ? I was in the lower tier of the away supporters stand, but ahve to say I was involved in one of the best mexican waves ever, as it went round and round the whole stadium 3 or 4 times over. It was a great scene !!!!

I must admit that was a pretty cool mexican wave Went round a few times easily as you say although I seem to remember it took a bit of starting as one corner didnt seem to be that interested!

It always makes me laugh when they call it the "mexican wave" when it actually started long before that in American Football games and was brought to the attention of the world at the Los Angeles Olympic Games

They seem to have taken it to a new level this tournament. All the mexican waves I have been in did not start with arms out stretched and the wavering of the hands.

I went to watch the International 7s at Twickers last year and people threw up their cardboard 'four beer' holders as well. Look fantastic, but you had to keep your wits about you when they came down.
