Which do you prefer?

Anyone who thinks Metric is more Rational should tell me how OLD they are in Metric, a day and a year being Imperial measurements.

Optimally people should be allowed to use both. Cant see this cultureless and authoritarian Government agreeing though.

You absolute FLANGETARD. I have honestly never seen such a ridiculous post on NSC. :shootself

Everything is measured in the simplest units. Distance & weight in one that is easily divided. Time in one that coincides with the earth's spin/orbit.

There all forms of measurement Idiot, the point of which is to communicate information.

to be pedantic, a year is a Roman construct and the day is Babylonian (or somthin like that).

I was born after metricfication but still use imperial everyday, its easier because everythings single syllable. It'll never leave our langauge.

Exactly how long does it take for the earth to spin round the sun?

Are you seriously suggesting that until the Babylonians, no-one had the concept of counting how many times the sun rises and sets?

no, it was they or some other ancient civilisation that gave us the crappy day=24hour. It could just as easily been divided into 10hours or 42. same goes for 1hour=60 minute. completly arbitary and had religous/cultural significance at the time.

For some older people it was quite confussing when we went metric...................(probably another bloody European directive)

As I was young when it happened it did'nt worry me a lot, but I do have sympathy with people who prefer imperial weights and measures, and don't think it's right that some jobsworth should prosecute a trader for using imperial.

i know, but things change. i'll be old one day (i hope) and well, its just the way life is really.

its such a dull thing to get worked up over if you ask me.its the job of the shopkeepers to help out people who are a bit confused. how hard would that be?

I remember being at junior school and there being a big fuss over using metric for everything, with orange leaflets everywhere, and the next minute they were giving us pints of curdled milk. It was at that moment I realised what a silly world we live in.

What surprisingly entertaining threads lurk beneath the dullest titles. I'll have to go back now and open up all the threads I dismissed as "boring" just from the title.

I may be some time.

I bet very few people posting on here know what their weight and height are in metric. Imperial will be around for a few years yet alongside metric, despite the E.U trying to turn us into good little Europeans

The EEC official change over date for the UK to adopt the metric system is... March 1975. Which goes to show how cultural our weights and measuring system is.

Going to school at the time I did (1974-86), we were lucky that we were taught both systems. Therefore, I know that if I go to the shop and ask for a pound of cheddar, and the crossbred pikey behind the counter goes 'Yerrhwhat?', I can always say (albeit very slowly) - 'doh, OK, 450 grammes of cheddar, although 4 grammes slightly over will suffice, please, and no gobbing on it.' And I can be sure in the knowledge that I HAVE JUST HAD TO f***ing REPEAT MYSELF.
