[Albion] Message to a mate

Just sent this to a Sheffield United mate.

Bit of a boring season. Probably go out of the FA Cup to Chelsea in the next two weeks (playing them twice in a week & no idea which is cup or league), Europe is unlikely, not getting relegated. The magic of premier league stability šŸ™„

Am I entitled etc? Genuinely I'm actually happy with this and Europe every few seasons would be a dream.

Where are you individually?

Iā€™ll reply properly tomorrow, but with the Mrs safely tucked up in bed and the Wi-Fi working at its late night optimum, Iā€™m gonna enjoy some serious ME TIME for the next few mins. Really help me forget about a turgid day ya know.

I am similar to you. However, I would like to see FH play our team the way he wants. All this adapting and pragmatic stuff isn't really working out. We should have just kept with the high line and attacked the opposition quickly. It would have meant a few Chelsea-style defeats and a whole lot of moaning on here (but lets face it we are going to get that whatever he does) but at least we would have a clear identity and it would be exciting.

Having said that perhaps he wants to do this but injuries are hamstringing him? Perhaps if we continued with the high line we would be where Spurs are now.

So yeah/nah who knows, perhaps we should be waiting until we have a more settled squad to see what we have.

But year, boring midtable is about what we are looking at this season, a cup run looks unlikely but you never know.

I wouldn't see this as entitlement. It's important to remember that Bloom has poured a LOT of investment into the squad in the last 12 months and Barber has spoken publicly on numerous occasions about how our ambitions as a club are to compete regularly for European football. Of course this is a slow-burning process and not one that can happen overnight.

Me personally, I feel like we're going to be short of that this season and feel a bit disappointed to not be competing for the European spots. There's still plenty of time for the season to pick up but it feels like it's going to dwindle out into a season of just PL stability as you say.

But I don't think it's entitlement to A) want more for your club and B) have high ambitions that align with the board - with the amount of money we've spent and with the talent we have in the squad it does feel a bit disappointing the way this season is panning out so far.

I donā€™t want to discuss the piss taking Whatsapp texts I received yesterday

I am accepting of very dull and mostly disappointing football and results for the rest of the season, unless/until Fab stops being so arrogant boring and naive in his bollox, almost corporate speak, and bizarre team selections amid injuries and debatable reasons for last minute drop outs

All of that.

Plus not losing the will to live after a humiliating defeat is a good place to be at.

I have taken defeats in the past very badly. When we were in danger of dropping out of the league.
And the 5-0 at Shitehole park.
After all that, in the mid table of the EPL, I'll take all the wins and shrug off the defeats.
Provided we stay well above the drop zone.

The only thing that jumps out as a little off there is ā€œEurope every few seasonsā€. I donā€™t think thatā€™s realistic, or to be expected. Maybe 1 in 4 or 5 would be possible, or maybe more in the future if our progress continues. But with teams like Villa, Newcastle, Fulham, Forest & Bournemouth joining the European hunt it just wonā€™t be possible to be there every few years. Maybe this slight over expectation by some leads to unnecessary discontent. We need to remember that mid table finishes, safe from the relegation battle, but no European are absolutely fine. Very good in fact. & then if weā€™re really pushing for Europe every 4-5 seasons, well that would be great, and maybe a more realistic reflection of where we are.

If we finish 13th this season it will be the fourth (equal) best finish in the history of the club.
In the history of the club.

What did we do last time we finished 13th in the top flight (at the time, our highest ever finish)?
Oh yes, we gave the manager Mike Bailey a few more months then sacked him.

Funny old game.

I'm generally happy enough with any season in the prem where we don't have relegation worries, would be nice to have another good cup run. The disappointing thing is the "what could have been" for both this and last season. Having been so high in the table and on such good runs the dreams of more europe trips get raised but then tumble away with terrible form against the lower teams.

Sent to a friend after Iā€™d calmed down from their piss takingā€¦
Life in the Premier League-
Play like the best team in Europe and we finish mid table. Play like a non-league team from a small country somewhere in Europe and we still finish mid-table.

(Theyā€™re a Portsmouth fan so at least thereā€™s that)

And replaced him with media loving ā€˜White dancing shoes Jimmy Meliaā€™ who won 7 out of 49 league games (something like that), okay - got us to the Cup Final, was disrespected and made fun of by the players. Yeah, that was a terrific appointment.

The ultimate test of true friendship.

When your hands are both bandaged up (because they got run over and crushed by a reckless e-Scooter when you were removing single strands of grass from the pavement in front of your house with tweezers), a true friend gives you a hand with this sort of thing.
