"Mentioned" - what do that mean?

I noticed that an NSC contributor had made sub 100 posts but has had more than a dozen mentions. Most people seem to have a ratio of mentions to posts at just a fraction of this. Perhaps they are less interesting?

What are mentions and why would someone with only a few posts have so many of these things?
