Seeing Gerry Ryan on Saturday brought back the memories. I only got a ticket for the train on the Thursday when Ron Pavey released 6 for the Guards van. On Friday night I blagged my way into the casino until 2am when it shut then waited on the station. I think the train left about 6am. So exciting. Glorious sunshine and our stand was packed - even more so when the second train arrived (late) and another few hundred fans were squeezed in. It's been great to watch the goals again on another thread. It just seemed so quick at the end when we all had to rush back to the station but what a journey home. Champagne all the way. Gerry Ryan sat in our compartment for quite a while - what a smashing bloke - and thought that he had played himself out of a job the next season. And then that reception at Brighton station. Let's hope we can cheer the team over the finishing line again on Saturday.

Thirteen years old and took a coach with the parents from Pool valley at 12 midnight, 16 coaches arrived in Durham at 7am, the bloke from the Golden Egg (remember them?) didn't know what hit him.

It was actually the THIRD special train that was late. It was a hastily arranged one when the first 2 sold out, and BR clearly didn't have a path for it up through the country. I remember waiting for ages over a disgusting red canal in Yorkshire somewhere and panicking we wouldn't make it at all. We missed the first 10 minutes and could only perch at the back of the packed terrace, but then Nobby scored and we bundled down the terrace to have a perfect view of the rest of the game.

In that case I was on the third train! We were at the back of the terrace and could only see the top half to the net!!!

I was on that train and ended up right at the back with the worst view I have ever had at a football match, but what a day and what an atmosphere.

I was on that second train!!!

We drove up and arrived at the ground about 30 minutes before kick off and legged it into the ground , again just managed to squeeze ourselves into the throng!

Can't remember much else about the day..

Left at 11pm friday night and were designated Whitley Bay arrived around 7am! The geezer in the cafe was just holding the fort for his mate who did his nut when after doing 40 breakfasts he mate took no money! Memories of the punch up out the back of the stand and a certain nsc user squirting ketchup over the scufflers! Great day out but with the Albion stopping Sunderland going up it was not too upsetting for the home fans! Saturday might be quite different take care guys!

Can anybody tell me about Brighton station upon the return ? Pictures would be great. I was too young to go at the time.

Sorry, it was before the days when we all had cameras on our phones. I remember being very confused about where all these people had come from as the champagne had affected my powers of logic. I can't even remember how I got back home!

It was in the days before mobile phones let alone phones with cameras.

Had no idea its was Sunderland that missed out, looked like it was the perfect time to play Newcastle

Still had Kodak Instamatics though. Someone must have taken a snap. Shame I've never got to see one.

I had a mobile phone when we went to Newcastle for that game but it was about the size of a car battery with a normal phone earpiece . I sat it between the 2 front seats of the Mk 1 Escort estate I hired.

I remember those, they were about £1500? My first mobile was the grey Motorola Brick with two batteries as the battery only lasted 30 mins talk time max and the phone cost an eye watering £600. I was always really embarrassed to walk along using it and used to find a quiet corner to make the call. Mobile phones were a poser's dream back then.
