Media outlets and Soccerball

In this post Olympiad glow, would you prefer to spend more time/money with a more rounded approach to national and international sport, as opposed to wall to wall Soccerball and soccerballists.

This question, back in the day, would have been 'would you change your newspaper....'

That's not so relevant in this day and age, so as well as newsprint, I'll expand it.

Eg, if 5live made the editorial decision to cut soccerball coverage by 50% in favour of 'other' sport, would you welcome it, or go running to Talk Spite?

One of the things that this Olympics has shown, is that if you are waiting for the GB soccerists to instill some pride, passion and success into the country, you will be waiting a very long time.

Pretty much everyone performed above expectations for GB - the soccerists performed to expectations ie failed again.

I would hope that there is a shift away from the media obsession with under-performing, overpaid clowns but it won't happen, sadly.

No it won't. Next week there'll be a top level athletics meeting somewhere with 20 people watching it while the papers will be full of rvp's wages stories. It's been a nice distraction, but nothing will change.

The Crystal Palace Diamond League events have sold out for the past 3 years I've been going.

I'd certainly welcome some tv coverage of handball, voleyball and hockey for starters. Perhaps then they'd be a local handball club set up?, as our nearest one currently is nearly 20 miles away

I don't subscribe to SKY so maybe they already do cover more sports, but I'd certainly welcome a return to Dickie Davis and World of Sport for today where a wide selection of sports can get some free to air time. ITV's excellent cycling coverage is a model well worth expanding I'd say. Come on Auntie, you know it makes sense.

No. I don't listen much to fivelive or talksport, so will transpose it to TV.

Sky have a dedicated F1 channel that I never watch because I'm not interested in F1. Sky sports show all the major golf tournaments, cricket, they show speedway, boxing, rugby leagues, there's often athletics on eurosport, the various grandslams (minus wimbledon), etc. But I don't watch them, because they don't interest me.

I mostly only watch the olympics because it's a cultural thing rather than an interest in the sports themselves, so even if these events were shown more, I wouldn't watch them more.

I would like to see more track cycling on the box. But that is it really for sports I'd like to hear more about. But I would hate to see some Olympic sports given extra coverage. Volleyball, handball and gymnastics are just a few examples of sports that I find quite boring so I would not want to be hearing about those on a regular basis.

Would love a weekly sports round up. Maybe an hour show covering some of the less glamours past times. With the advent of digital television this could me made available via the red button and / or the web. This will give these sports more coverage and help increase involvement.

I suppose taking myself out of it, maybe for kids it would be better. Listening to complaints about sports in school, it appears I was lucky, As well as football and cricket, I was introduced to rugby (well, touch rugby), rounders, volleyball, trampolining, badminton, tennis, swimming, cycling, athletics (including high jump, long jump, triple jump, discus, shot put), netball basketball, golf, a local kids club ran gmynastics, another local kids club took us on holidays where we could do kayaking/canoeing, with cubs I got to try out fencing, there were local judo, boxing, kickboxing and karate clubs.

I've ever felt like I haven't been exposed to sports, and now I'm older I've settled on the ones I like. A change of what's available won't affect me. But if exposure to these sports is a problem for kids today, perhaps in looking at replacing football with more sports, we should look at kids TV and replacing at least some of the repeated programmes in the kids hours for sports shows?

Other than the football and track and field the only reason I really care about the sports is because they are representing GB. When they go back to competing for them self I will stop caring again.
