McGee - We can survive in Division One

Fresh from their weekend victory over Notts County, Brighton & Hove Albion have booked themselves a place in the Division Two playoffs and are potentially three games away from joining Leeds, Leicester and Wolverhapton Wanderers in the first division. We talked to manager Mark McGee on whether or not Brighton have what it takes to survive or even propser in Division One.

"Well, we're still a long way away from rubbing shoulders with the elite, but we're heading in the right direction... We've some quality players here who I'm confident can keep us in division one. Leon's [Knight, Albions' top scorer this year with 26 goals in all competitions] certainly got the ability and instinct to score and I feel Chris [Iwelumo, a recent signing from Stoke City] also has a lot to offer. I think the key is to get a good start, we need to be out of the blocks and running."

Brighton have retained the core of the side that gallanty dropped out of Division One under now Reading manager, Steve Coppell, and the addition of the two strikers this season has been a key factor in the push for the play-offs. It's for this reason that many think they may once again struggle.

"I think it would be unfair to question the players' commitment and abililty" remonstrates McGee. "Some of the lad here came here under Micky Adams when Brighton were languishing in the third, a few years back, It's been their drive and ability on the pitch which took them to the first division in the first place and I'll tell you, having been at Millwall when we played them, they certainly weren't a team that could be easily rolled over." I think defensively we'll be ok. We've got a good blend of youth and experience at the back and there is competition for places, some of the younger players we've got coming through look very promising"

So any chance of wholesale changes if Division One beckons for next year?

"I think that if we can hang on to our better players, we'll be ok." claims McGee, "People like David Lee will have to stay if we're to challenge the likes of those wankers from Selhurst next year"

This transcript is is no way genuine. Information contained within has been made up by me and is not genuine, although I'd like to think the bit about the wankers is.

Anyone remember how Peter Taylor used to refer to the team as "them"?

Yer I remember that well and how it always used to worry me slighty that he would bugger off as soon as he could, I remember PT on soccer sunday, I think after winning the Div 2 championship and he went to call Albion them and then suddenly went us. ???
