Maty Ryan is an ex-player, let him be.

Connolly takes the piss out of all of us that fund his wages. Busts Covid rules most of us stick to without even an apology for doing so. He's at Middlesbrough now, so no longer a problem. I hope he surprises me after the loan. I doubt he will.

I have a soft spot for Kerry, the only Brighton footballer named after two Irish counties!
He was a fantastic servant in the dark days, and if Cucu is as good a servant in the (hopefully) glory days than I for one will be happy.

Harty did a smashing interview with Kerry recently, well worth a watch.

And as to Ryan, he was a good goalie for us, never really let us down, but Sanchez is an upgrade. But then as you are trying to point out most of our starting 11 are better than the team CH put out in that first season of the PL

The starting line up against City for the first game:
Ryan
Bruno
Dunk
Duffy
Suttner
Stephens
Gross
Hemed
March
Propper
Brown (Isiah).

Of that, Brown, Propper, Hemed, Gross, Stephens, Suttner would not be starter for our current team (fully fit). Duffy only plays when our Webster and Dunk aren't fit and even then Burn and Veltman frequently get the nod ahead of him. Sanchez is a step up from Ryan but he was still a great servant to the club.

Do you still stand by the other 10 players arent substantially different though?

Ok, I'll bite.

In his last season with us, Ryan faced a PSxG (xG calculated after the shot has been taken) of 0.37. This was the highest in the league. However, we only gave up 117 shots on target, the 3rd fewest in the league.

This season, Sanchez has faced a PSxG of 0.25 which is the 4th lowest in the league, from 75 shots on target which is the 6th lowest in the league.

So, to summarize, Ryan didn't face many shots but those that he did were very difficult shots to save. That's why to some simple-minded folk, they believe that Ryan conceded every shot that he faced.

Now, that said, Sanchez is a clear upgrade in terms of shot-stopping but that's not the biggest factor in our resurgence.

Its more simpler than statistics..... The Southampton save apart, there were very few times when I thought "wow, how did Maty get near that"?

He saved routine shots well, but that is what I would expect, he very rarely made top drawer saves IMO......

Last 10 minutes yesterday Sanchez was plucking Everton crosses out of the air with ease. Ryan didn’t command the 6 yard area and was unable to claim crosses easily. Much more reassuring to rely on a keeper to take the pressure off.

Ryan also had a touch of the ‘Joe Harts’ - always looked like he got beaten by great goals when really he dived and didn’t get near it. Anyway we’ve moved on, as did he via a loan at Arsenal so all parties have done well

Yep one good save in 2 years !!!

Sanchez makes those saves every game. Humongous upgrade.

I still don't think we are playing that much better than last season. Big difference is the keeper.

I think the defence now have confidence in the keeper behind them whereas with Ryan it was always tenterhooks
