Chairman Steve Hamer says that selling leading scorer Matty Taylor during the transfer window is the "last thing" Bristol Rovers are considering.

Newspaper reports have claimed this afternoon that four Championship clubs and Glasgow Rangers are preparing to engage in a 'January transfer war' for Taylor's signature.

Reports claim that Brighton, Cardiff City, QPR and Wolves are preparing to swoop for a player who, the writer claims, has a buy-out clause inserted in his contract that allows him to leave for less than £1million.

Whilst we haven't had huge amounts of luck with players from League 1 and 2 we must remember that Jamie Vardy was snapped up from the conference at 25 years old so there are hidden gems out there

We would have to be looking very carefully at anyone especially from two divisions lower at this point in time !

Whilst I admire your positivity, the Jamie Vardy situation was incredibly unusual. Most players would not improve significantly once into their mid-20s.

Matty Taylor is a very talented player in that division, who is to say he can't do it higher up the football ladder.

Hamer was unwilling to discuss the terms of Taylor's contract, but he did say: "If there is a deal on the table that is good for the football club and good for the player then it is something you have to consider if and when that situation arises."But Matty has recently signed a new contract and selling him in the January window is the last thing on our minds at the moment."

Taylor signed a new and improved two-year deal with Rovers in the summer after holding talks with several clubs who were keen to secure his services at a time when he was a free agent.
The striker has continued his prolific run of form over the last two years into the current season in League One and scouts have been flocking to the Memorial Stadium to check on a man who has scored 15 goals in 22 games.


Well for less than a million then he could be a very good back up player and worth a punt.

Quite. Grant Holt too did alright for a time. Plenty of players have made the step up: OK, Craig Mackail-Smith didn't really work out, and Baldock has never been prolific (but personally I think he has far more technical ability as a footballer than CMS ever did). Not a reason to ignore the lower leagues forever though.

I can see your point but I suspect Taylor isn't one of them, primarily because Matty Taylor is one of those players who is on everyone's radar and will probably be overpriced. Then again, he plays at Bristol Rovers, so they'll probably sell him for about £3.50 and a packet of crisps.

Nahki Wells also stepped up (from Bradford), Jordan Rhodes left then-League-One Huddersfield and succeeded at Championship level, Gary Hooper used to play for Scunthorpe, Will Grigg for Walsall...etc etc.
