We went for a simba hybrid pro on sale last year. It was an extortionate amount of money imo for a mattress but the wife has bad sciatica and it was recommended. It has been incredible for both her and me. Highly comfortable and has helped her back and leg no end.
They also do a 200 night trial so you can give it a go and send it back if you’re not happy. That was what sold me as we could at least get a refund if it wasn’t great.

I will look into this.
Regarding cost I figure I spend a third of my day in bed, and I want to be comfortable, so it makes sense to spend accordingly.
I worked on a 4 star London Hotel project a few years ago and from memory, they had Simba mattresses.
Exactly. Which is why I was about to post 'waterproof'.

Bog standard Simba is what we have.pretty comfortable and decent price. We previously bought the Emma one with the 200 night thing and sent it back after a couple of months owing to numbness!
I recommend 'firm' and none of that f***ing memory-foam bolleaux.
Flop out on it before buying. None of that Amazon 'in the post' malarkey.

We’ve a traditional style Vispring mattress, expensive, cool in summer, lasts forever. Heavy!

Everything Tempur is glorious, even their sleep masks. Pricey though.
I've got an Nrem TWeak mattress. They customise it to your weight, sleeping style and preferred firmness. It was £1100, 5 years ago, so not cheap but not ultra expensive. I kept it after the 100 day trial. It has the benefit of specifying different firmness and weights for 2 people, which can be tweaked by moving different memory foam sections around. Useful when you partner wants a different firmness, which mine does.
I found it better after I lost a bit of weight and now it's spot on.

I can't remember what make but we got a new one a couple of years ago and went to a bed shop to test all the types. Settled on a memory one on the hard side - great nights sleep ever since. Highly recommend testing - after all you spend a third of your life on it. And buy the best you can.

The fancy foam type are all the rage but do have some drawbacks. They are no good if you are a hot sleeper as they tend to retain the heat. Similarly even if you use a mattress protector ( and we know bed wetting is a problem on here) over time they will retain body odors more than a conventional one.
Some of the best but not cheap ones are actually hybrid in that they may have some foam element but also traditional posture springs. You can also get ones that have a thin layer of gel topping which keeps hot sleepers cooler.
We recently bought mattresses from Dreams and they have a machine which maps what level of firmness might be suitable for you. Excellent service and not too pushy.
