Matthew Edwards

Anyone remember Matthew Edwards who scored for us against Man U on David Beckham's debut?

Bumped into him at a pub in Reading (turns out he works for the same company as me now).

Anyway top bloke says he always looks out for our results and was gutted everytime he went past the Goldstone site.

:clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

I remember him. Quite skillful but a little lightweight. Thought he'd become a better player than he actually did. Pity - he always seemed like a good bloke

Danny Wallace scored their goal, Kanchelskis was subbed for Beckham ("thank god for that" spoken, "WHO ARE YOU" chanted")

Edwards said he had his eyes closed long before the ball got to him. Beeney made a magnificent double save in front of the south stand from Neil Webb - out at his feet at the edge of the box then frantically back - peddling to tip over the second attempt.

A bearded, student pevenseagull was clearly visible on the TV going absolutely potty in the North Stand when we scored. Quite a few Man U supporters (from Burgess Hill, Hailsham etc. etc. ) in the North Stand that night.

Got it on tape somewhere.

I believe the phrase is: marvellous scenes.

We lost the replay 1-0 at a partially rebuilt Old Trafford with a lot of school kids in the stand to the right of the Brighton fans which gave a comically high register to their chants. I had the quarter light on my Renault 5 smashed driving away from the ground. A couple of months later we again lost 1-0 at Old Trafford in the FA cup to a Giggs free kick. Over 3 games Man U only managed to put 3 past us and we gave them a serious run for their money in every game - and I think they won the double

Danny Wallace is in Four Four Two this month saying that was the best goal he ever scored. He suffers from MS now and can't even walk 100 yards without being in agony. He can't even play football in the garden with his 9 year old son.

Southampton have organised a testimonial for him soon, so I hope he gets plenty of support. One of the rare occasions when a footballer's testimonial is deserved/justified IMHO.

Spoke to Gavin Geddes a few years back about the players that were around when he was an Albion player and mentioned how good I thought Edwards was at the time.
Geddes then pointed out that it was Edwards that kept hime out of the first team most of the time.
Talk about a conversation stopper!

That is very sad. A sell out testimonial surely.

Let's hope so. I think it's against a Man United XI so should attract plenty of Hampshire Reds!

I read that Southampton are making Danny Wallace pay for the costs of stewards, catering, hire of the stadium etc. If that's true then I must say that Southampton FC are the biggest bunch of tight-arsed fucks i've ever heard of.

I'd be surprised, given how popular a player he was, and considering he is suffering from a serious illness, but you never know with the likes of Rupert Lowe....
