BBC now reporting it can't be fixed remotely and needs a "hands on keyboard" reboot of every affected computer.

Crowdstrike have 24,000 customers worldwide.

Customers, i.e. companies. Each with many, many end users.

What a shitshow.
We are ONE of those customers.

(31,000 employees worldwide...)

That was my (badly-made) point.

One PC in front of you where you have admin rights = easy

Hundreds or thousands of PCs (including servers) spread all over the place, and no-one local having admin rights = less easy.
Not badly made at all. Just adding to it.

Your post made me think what a nightmare it would be if you had to explain tech instructions to everyone on NSC

Worthing
My Grandson always says when my phone losses WiFi in the car” Too many trees , Grandad”

If they chop down some more rainforest, that might solve the problem.

sure, my "simple" point alluded to at least a known fix that can be applied.

currently Sky have got online, to bring us some pundit telling us it "could" have been a trojan attack. stay classy Sky.

  • A major IT problem is disrupting transport, healthcare, businesses, and other sectors across the world
  • Cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike blames an issues with one of its updates for Windows - it says the problem has been "identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed"
  • Crowdstrike's shares are down by more than 20% in unofficial trading in the US - equal to a $16bn loss in value
  • Worldwide, more than 1,000 flights have been cancelled - but American Airlines says flights are resuming again
  • In the UK, NHS England says most GP practices are affected - but there is no known impact on emergency services
  • There are also some delays on the trains - but one operator says it is "actually an improvement to normal"

Sussex but not by the sea
This was always 'when' not 'if'.
Most servers these days are VM images so scaremongering that 10,000s of servers need a keyboard plugged in is typical media hyperbole, the VM hosts maybe. What will be taking the time is getting root access where required and testing roll back. Lots of big companies will be learning that hardly anyone really knows their major DR event processes.

Simple if you have one PC in front of you and you have admin rights to do that.

Less simple if you have thousands of machines spread far and wide, and the users of those machines lack either the admin rights and/or the technical confidence to operate a command line.
Sounds like a 5-minute job to me

depends if the VMs have the endpoint security installed. think this incident is going to show a lot of corporate security policy demands such things, even if it makes little sense to sysadmins.

Mac admin here in peace :ROFLMAO: wouldn't have known there was an issue if I didn't try log onto NSC first thing. I sent a few Slacks letting the company know there was a mass global outage and to not disturb me, told my (non technical) boss to leave me alone and have had a lovely morning sat out on the patio catching up on yesterday stage of the Tour de France and winding up my mate who works at Mercedes F1 who's been in the paddock since 5am and unable to do anything as their sponsor CrowdStrike broke their systems.
Formula 1 first practice due to start in a few minutes. Be interesting to see how quickly they get out on track :p
