Very much this. I think some people have been watching too many movies.People are ridiculous. It's a beautiful city - enjoy it
If anyone does get beaten up in Marseille I’m willing to bet it will be @cunning fergusOk, lots of supposition in there but the actual travel advice from the club says:
‘
Lots of people will be reading this thread for information and will not share your desire for arguments with petty officialdom.
- Carry photo ID (passport) at all times in the city.’
Fwiw my comment was a bit tongue in cheek but perhaps didn’t come across very well in written text.Very much this. I think some people have been watching too many movies.
So you turn up with your ticket at the Marseille ground, and ahead of entry the Police ask to see your ticket and passport, You hand over your ticket, but say You don't have your passport with you. You are refused entry and asked to leave the area. You can suggest what you like, however given that France is currently hosting the RWC I seriously doubt its officials/police will be actively demanding sight of passports from Tourists in the street (whether in Marseille or not). Why would they do it, to check you have it, then what if you don’t? Arrest……..and then before you know it you’re the Count of Monte Cristo? Fantasy stuff.
Maybe, for the first time when collecting an away ticket the club will refuse to release it unless they see the physical evidence of my ID. I doubt that too, given the amount of data on my phone over and above photos of ID (e.g. proof of flights, hotel, season ticket, photos of games, the email cache).
In a perverse way I hope you are right because I would love to that conversation with an official in a foreign country where I needed a passport to get there. That would be great sport, sadly for me in that context I think you're wrong (again).
Excellent, finally it’s about an opportunity for you to put your money where your mouth is?If anyone does get beaten up in Marseille I’m willing to bet it will be @cunning fergus
Do you seriously think the French police are going to ask individuals with a ticket at the ground to show their passports to validate their identity? These will be individuals that needed to provide ID to get the ticket in the first place? So you turn up with your ticket at the Marseille ground, and ahead of entry the Police ask to see your ticket and passport, You hand over your ticket, but say You don't have your passport with you. You are refused entry and asked to leave the area.
You then start saying don't be so silly, I don't need a passport. After a short time where other fans are allowed into the ground after showing their ticket and passport, you suddenly realize that your ticket number contains the last four numbers from your passport, and without being able to provide both, you are not gaining entry to the ground.
You may think this won't happen, it's your choice, but it's happened to Man Utd fans in the past.
Sorry mate, but you sound like such an arse.Do you seriously think the French police are going to ask individuals with a ticket at the ground to show their passports to validate their identity? These will be individuals that needed to provide ID to get the ticket in the first place?
I won’t have my passport, I will have a photo of it on my phone, with other means of ID on my phone, I reckon that they won’t check (just like BHA officials don’t really check when you pick it up at the ground).
I will have a bet with you too if you like, (say 1k for REMF) that French police won’t be asking for physical passports at the ground if you have ID on your phone……….fancy putting your money where your mouth is?
Let’s take one step at a time………..Sorry mate, but you sound like such an arse.
Photo driving licence is accepted in France as photo ID, that is what i usually keep on me in France. I wont be carrying around my passport though in Marseille, as with many foreign travels with England i keep a photocopy of it in my pocket and the actual passport stays back at the Hotel.Ok, lots of supposition in there but the actual travel advice from the club says:

Bless. Your teenage angst and rebellion mildly amuses me, but this all.Excellent, finally it’s about an opportunity for you to put your money where your mouth is?
Shall we say 1k for the REMF?
Disappointing but not surprising response from a bona fide leeres gefass…….Bless. Your teenage angst and rebellion mildly amuses me, but this all.
You are wasting your time providing common sense advice to the monkey see, monkey do lot.Photo driving licence is accepted in France as photo ID, that is what i usually keep on me in France. You're such a rebel..Disappointing but not surprising response from a bona fide leeres gefass…….
I will leave the bet on the table in the unlikely event you grow a grow a pair in next couple of weeks.
I don't know if it is too expensive for you or if they still have rooms, but the Toyoko Inn was £169 for two nights and near to Place de la Joliette where we have to pick the tickets up from. I did it through booking.comSorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but anyone found good places to stay in Marseille? Some good Airbnb places available but a bit expensive. By the way for anyone not yet booked flights and not coming from the south coast, I managed to get £30 tickets from Stansted to Nimes which is a little over an hour away by train. Did involve a 3 night stay and just a small bag though!
Thanks for you posts. Much appreciated.Hey guys !!
Sorry I've been a bit AFK - vacations. Sorry also for the AEK match...
We are undergoing a major crisis. But that's Marseille, happens roughly every three years. In present circumstances, a draw in Amsterdam is a good result for us.
The match against you might already be decisive. If we win you would be in much worse shape than you could imagine (trust me on this ... I know way too well what happens in European groups when you have 0/6). If you win we're in a bad shape especially in those major crisis times. My money would be on us throwing away the away game against Paris and focusing on the EL match.
To answer a passing by question, and to make a point, la Joliette area is ok. Completely ok by daytime, okish at night time. Not exciting but ok. You have a few bars around there, and I'd advise you to call them right now if your plan is to go there after the match. Right. They might want some good business or ... not. While Marseille is not the shades someone who have lived in Marseille here describes, there are indeed some sensitive areas. Some of those close to la Joliette (métro stations Desiree Clary and further north should outright be avoided). The walk from St Charles to La Joliette is very meh. Take the metro, especially at night.
I'm sad you've been theoretically banned from the Vieux Port area. But anyway like I sayed before this is mainly a touristic area. While le panier is more interesting the local feel about it tends to fade away.
Oh and yes.... in France any 18+ citizen HAS to have a valid ID at any time. That's law. There are some controls (especially in Paris or if you look young or if you're smoking illegal stuff or if you look like a drunk English during an European League match etc...). You could (and it happens) be escorted to the police station if you don't have an ID. There's no real reason to at least have a British ID with you (that should be enough unless you happen to really piss off an officer). The guys interested in your wallet are not interested in your passport. Just keep both separated, even in case of pickpocketting it would do the trick... shaddy guys here want fresh and easy money. Not your passports or your souls ...
Cheers !
