Ah, one of irrational hatreds. All a bit hazy, but I remember when we were in Div 1,something about their then manager John Bond slagging Brighton off on football focus along the lines of "We don't want little teams like Brighton in Division 1". We then promptly beat them 4-1 at The Goldstone that day.

That was the game where Gerry Ryan ran from the half way line beating all the man city players on the way to scoring in the south stand goal if i remember correctly

Or am i thinking of the cup game against them in 83

Not sure what game is was to be honest. Could have been any one of 3 really. All I remember is John Bond slagging us off, then us putting 4 goals past them.

F.A. Cup 82/83 Albion 4 City 0
Div 1 81/82 Albion 4 City 1
Div 1 79/80 Albion 4 City 1

Quality game in 1989: 2-1 to us, A twice taken Curbs pen and a Brightwell OG.. plus Keith Cuss (ball boy) got sacked for heading the ball into the West Stand!

Noel & Liam Gallagher were in the away end by the way, holding inflatable bananas.. rock and roll!

Abort, retry, fail
Cant find attendances or scorers.

Its the matches at Maine Road I am interested in. In particular the attendences.

In that case, use the dates and check out The Great Cornholio's old site.

http://results.albionarchives.org/

It hasn't been updated for a few years now, but then we haven't played them recently for some unknown reason.

The biggest pair of inflatable lips were in the away end too (noth east corner by the floodlight)....absolutely hilarious.

Brilliant game, superb atmosphere and the ball boy heading the ball into the players car park was a classic

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
and I seem to recall man City playing in a very strange purple and white striped shirt

No. You are thinking of the first game. 83 Cup game scorers were Robinson (2), Smillie & James Case:bounce:

We also lost 1-0 at home to them towards the end of the 82-83 season which sent us back down to the old Div.2

The hatred of Bond came from his time as Bournemouth manager and we pipped his lot for promotion in 71/72.

The fierce rivalry of the time is reflected in the attendences for those div 3 fixtures, 30,600 at the Goldstone and over 22,000 at Bournemouth.

Seems quite unreal now.

I think they stuffed us 4-0 at Maine Road in the 83-84 season. It was Joe Corrigans first visit back there since leaving them. Not good !!

I recall Brighton scoring from a wonderful Ian Brightwell headed og.
