the Reinheitsgebot has lead to largely uniform beers imo, sure its better than the average beer but its not a high benchmark. one would take Czech lagers over most German ones, Belgium ales, English ales, even American ales have far more interesting things going on. their really good beer is outside the original rules anyway, ie wheat beer. i dont know if theres anything rules for sausages, im not saying they are bad just not as great as some make out. the baseline is better but there isnt the variation or peaks that can be found in a good British sausage. we make some cracking sausages here, and the many german sausages ive had have been good but not the highwater mark of the craft.

Watched the BBC2 documentary, this evening, on the rise of the German Auto industry. (9pm just after Top Gear)

We really did miss a trick after the war. I was at school in the 70s and remember the never ending strikes by car workers in this country.

Both sides were to blame. In Germany, management recognised car workers as skilled engineers and had representatives on the board to work for the common good.

In Britain it was always confrontational. Poor management allowed wankers like Red Robbo to "call out the workers" for the smallest of disputes. We never recovered. Instead of being our rivals, Germany now owns our most well known brands

They have also devised a toilet system where one can inspect what has gone in to match what is going out.........now that is progress.

I partially agree with your beer comments. IMHO Germany has consistently excellent beer from 1300 breweries all over the country which is fresh, flavoursome and generally of high quality. But the flip-side of the purity law is that it hinders experimentation with different styles; hence the variety of beers is incredibly narrow. The US and the UK are the go-to places for beer but there are a number of brewers in Germany who are starting to break the rules and produce different styles now.

I don't think that's wholly true. By chance, there's a piece in this month's What's Brewing about German beers: the theme being that different towns and cities have their own distinctive style. Obviously, we know about pilsener but there's kolsch from Cologne and Berlinerweisse (and many others). The point is that Germany has much more regional differentiation than we have: we produce many excellent beers but there's no marked difference between beers from, say, the west country and from the west midlands. And while the US does produce many excellent beers from craft breweries, they're really hard to find - you can walk into any German bar at random and find a decent beer, probably only one in 50 US bars sells something drinkable

Fair point, there is regional variation e.g. Alt-beer from Dussledorf. I was trying, unsuccessfully, to make a point about the UK having a wider range of distinctly different ales which I think is the case (e.g. pales, IPAs, bitters, stouts, porters, lagers, amber, mild etc ). If you pop into a regular bar here you will struggle to find much beyond an (excellent) pils or a wheat beer. I'm not an expert by any means but whilst Germany has more regional variation the UK seems, to me, to have more variation as a whole.

Good article. No one would deny that the Germans and Germany piss all over us in some respects, but we do run ourselves down too much. Herr Tubthumper, like a modern day Lord HawHaw, does have form in this in telling us how much better the Germans are. Often when reading his posts I'm reminded of that great (British) lyricist, W.S. Gilbert:

It was a really bad programme. A lazy, tired script, peppered with war cliches, it told us absolutely nothing new. Not even any analysis of German wirtschaftswunder. A great shame as expected so much more from Dominic Sandbrook.
