I teach 8 year olds here in Australia and we are providing 4 lessons per day for our kids. Hours of work are going into them and they are of a very high standard (even if I say so myself. We work as a team so basically do one each per day, this gives us plenty of time to dedicate to them. Other than this we are reviewing, marking and giving feedback on work through our learning platform. I honestly thought I would be able to work less hours but alas I am working my full 9am - 3.30pm hours*. Personally i think it is too much for the poor little blighters but of course we have to be consistent.










*Jokes - of course i am working my usual 8.00 - 5.00 and then another couple in the evening.

You forgot media studies, how can one be part of the liberal elite without an understanding a bit about the media. I know that you have learned all about the media at the school of hard knocks but not everyone is that lucky. They all stir shit you know.

I will certainly think twice and let my chauffeur know that he needs to be careful when dropping me off to school. Well on the days I am actually there anyway.

I cannot speak for all schools but our grandson's school has been setting homework and, in my opinion, too much. He is staying with us and the 2 of us when sharing the teaching have found it hard going and even with individual tuition we are finding it hard to fit in the normal school day. We are trying to keep him in his usual routine. However I think the problems are occuring when one parent has 2 or 3 kids to look after, particulary young kids, as they all require a lot of time on a one to one basis which you cnnot do if you have several kids vying for your attention. The sooner the kids are back at school the better it will be for all of them.

Whilst I’m not taking sides , I have friends with kids at primary state schools in Brighton & Hove & also some friends that have primary school children at both Brighton college & Hurstpierpoint college .

At the state schools , they are sending work sheets for the kids to do and they have google classroom . The amount of work seems to vary from between 2- 3 hours per day . At Brighton college & hurst they are doing lessons via zoom or similar with their teacher and the hours are normal school hours .

So yes there does appear to be a big difference in what pupils are receiving and I’m not entirely sure what state school teachers are doing as they are clearly not teaching but I guess as Btn college & Hurst charge approx £20-25k per child per year basic costs and are two of the best results achieving schools in Sussex, I guess it would be right to expect a lot more .

My-ex wife is a teacher at a private school and does every timetabled lesson via Microsoft Teams. Really don't understand why state schools can't do similar.

My 2 kids are at primary school, year 4 and 5 respectively.

Each week we receive a 'workbook' via email with set work, most of which seems to entail logging onto something called BBC bitesize and watching clips. It's all pretty uninspiring stuff, to be honest. As a parent, none of the set work has a 'learning objective' attached to it, to help us novice teachers understand what we should be driving at. Nor does it suggest a recommended duration for each task, making structuring the day / week more challenging than perhaps it could be. Also, there is no facility in place for returning the work and having it marked or assessed by the teacher. All in all, I have been pretty disappointed by how the teachers at my children's school have stepped up to this. It rather feels like they are doing the very least they could do, rather than the most. I raised these points with the Head. I got the feeling that my feedback wasn't regarded as helpful.

Fair play to those teachers out there who are striving to still educate.
