The Mrs and I are looking to go to Madrid the week after Easter and were wondering if anyone had been.

ie what's to do, what's to see, where to avoid, where to go. What is the trasportation like..etc etc.

Cheers

Went there for the England game last November
Was great, for some reason the seafood is really great, especially in the tapas bars around the main square - also a shop that sells sunderland shirts

Loads of tacky shops and loads of boutiques

The shop in the main train station sells every type of gun and knife you could ever wish to see

Also the china town area has unbelievable amounts of junk - i managed to find a singing osama bin laden, and a sining saddam hussain

The tube is good. Unfortunately, can't remember much as I was there on football tour!!! The tour of the Bernabeu is pretty special.

Glad about the tube as I'm staying at a Travelodge not far from the airport. Bargain €175 for 5 days.

You should be doing a cruise or something to celebrate that amount of years.

I'm going to take the wife to Clacton

Good thinking man!! Also Brugges was nice for a special weekend!! Chocolates and good food and cobbled streets and its easy to get to..aside from all the history of the place...

Lovely city, freindly people. I went there with the missus for a long weekend - the weekend of the 5-0 Palace game...

The main square is Plaza Mayor - all cafes and bars, with usually some kind of exhibition or concert in the middle. There's no lack of bars or tapas eateries in the centre. Best tapas bars are in the Asturias area (just of the Palaza Mayor - away from the big shopping stores).

If it's culture you're after, there's the Prado or the Thyssen or the Reina Sofia museums. www.red2000.com/spain/madrid/museum.html or the Royal Palace. A stroll around the Parc del Retiro would be good as well.

Getting around on the tube is piss-easy. It's a 20-minute tube ride from the airport to the city centre - don't bother with the taxis unless you have a good nappy - they're terrifying. Oh, and the stadium tour of the Bernabeu is excellent...

I am 99.9999999% certain you'll have a great time there.

You may find it very hot there in July! Make sure the place you're staying has AirCon... There are loads of large public swimming pools in Madrid if you wish to relax one day and have a swim.

Yeah, cheers, the travelodge has it. I also have one of those attractive caps with the flap down the back of the neck.

It's a long story but we're also going to malaga and it worked out €500 cheaper to fly to madrid, have an extra 5 days holiday and hire a car than just the flights to malaga.

Its very much a do it yourself tour, with a signposted walk around the stadium.
