Went to the young seagulls yesterday (great day) and then took the kids down to the Pier for some afternoon fun and Brighton Council charged me £10 to park on Maderia Drive for up to 4 hours. Are they the new Robin Hood accept robbing the poor to pay for their prawn sandwiches!!! It is going to be tough going for the traders on the seafront with these charges.

Odd, it used to be quite cheap down there. Is it only the spaces right next to the pier that are expensive?

If the bus and train companies were cute and dropped the cost of travel below an hours parking for local journeys......council could loose out big time

I went down there at 7pm for a walk - for an HOUR (to take it up to free parking at 8pm) it was £3.50. We drove to the Marina, parked for free and simply had a longer walk. That is a ripoff - and local business can't be happy if they lose early evening trade.

Apparently the charges are set to increase for the summer months. I believe it will be £20 whether you stay for an hour or all day.

Just far enough away from LDC
sadly the green council will eat itself.

these changes are clearly bonkers and the consultation process has at least found a way of reducing the costs for the 67 spaces to the east of peter pans/yellowave.

clearly we are the only seaside resort in the UK that DOESNT want visitors

All those spaces will clearly be full come Summer, can't see what the traders have really got to moan about.

I'm not so sure they will be as full as they have been, and by that I mean for longer periods say from may til september. And the issue is that having been stung once, people may not come back. It is an increedibly short sighted proposal by the council. And given that the marina has a 4 hour limit on parking that too is not a viable alternative

To be fair there is free parking closer to the pier than the Marina, e.g. around Albion Hill and the bottom of Queens Park Road, but you have to know where you're going.

So after a year of a Green Council and two years with a Green MP we still have huge environmental issues around things like refuse collection and recycling (absolutely no change or improvement in my neighbourhood) and the only major change that i can see is a ridiculous policy on parking which will drive away tourists and damage local business. The only justification I've heard for the preposterous policies on parking and parking permits is that it funds investment into public transport. Anyone seen any major improvements lately?

Enjoy your seats while you can Green Party, you're on borrowed time.

Brighton seafront parking doubles - and you'll need £20 in change From The Argus)

PS Yes, sadly I did vote Green :nono:

They tried to make those areas permit only but the Peoples' Republic of Hanover quased their plans.

Tourists will vote with their feet, or wheels, or more likely their pockets. NCP are as bad, I think it is now £25 to park in Churchill Square if staying more than 6 hours. So any day trippers who fancy a bit of shopping in the square or the Lanes, then a spot of lunch and a walk on the prom get rippied off for the privelege (sp) of spending their money in our city.

We, and the council, need to realise that our economy is built on tourism.

Hopefully this is the final nail in the Green coffin. I may well move back once they are back out of "power"

More pertinent shurely is in deplorable increase in the cost for use of local football pitches for' football. In a year where hundreds of job have been created by football & tens of thousands of extra visitors have been brought in to spend by football this pitch increase apart from discoraging healthy activity is a ungrateful & disgraceful act

Almost unbelievable! Until you realise who is in power. Over here [Southern Spain] there would be riots if ayuntamientos tried a similar stunt. Our nearest beaches are Malaga & all the sea front parking there is free. Even Marbella only charges very reasonable amounts in the city centre. Use the popular & best beaches just outside & they are free for as long as you want. Rip off UK strikes again.
