I can't imagine anyone is likely to read this before heading north up the A23 / M23 tonight. But if they do, I'd give it anther hour or two.

A23 Hickstead queuing back to Pyecombe for no reason.
M23 accident, five fire engines and three ambulances just north of Gatwick turn and queuing back to Maidenbower

After a lovely day on the coast, you wouldn't want to sit in that lot if you didn't have to

Brighton is crazy with all bikes leaving town. Stay away from there as well if you can.

from sounds of it might be better off going another way, it'll take time to clear while all the time people still leaving Brighton. up the A22 from Uckfield for a nicer (moving) drive even if a slower slightly longer way.

My mother and I came back from a trip to Chichester and Pagham Harbour about an hour and a half ago. I chose to go up the B2139 from Storrington to Coolham and then the A272 to West Grinstead. When we crossed the A24 it was completely solid. I was glad I decided not to use the A24. Presumably this was traffic trying to avoid the M23.

And yet if you read the Argus, particularly the letters page, there are people complaining that Brighton is a ghost town at the weekend as people can't afford to pay the new parking charges. Apparently, Brighton is empty as all the Londoners are flocking to Eastbourne and Worthing now.

It's funny that I've been stuck in traffic every time that I go to town - it must be all those people from Worthing and Eastbourne going back to London via Brighton.

Looks Orange Bolney towards Pease Pottage then Orange turning to red from Gatwick up to M25. A24 looks clear all the way to Leatherhead, M25 green all the bottom half.
