Anybody ever actually BEEN to Nad Al Sheba?

Can you get a bet on-course? Can you have a drink?

Been to some wacky races in my time:

Malta - that trotting thing, poor man's Ben Hur, where you get disqualified for TRYING. Uncle Spielberg's selections would live long and prosper at that game.

Bangkok - proper racing, nice track, but it's all on the Tote. and though they have published times for the eight or ten races, they have to wait til there's enough money in the Tote before they can start the race. Takes forever. Think I managed to hack it for about five races in six hours or something.

Any more odd race meeting stories to enliven the thread?

Yep, been there a couple of times for the World Cup.

No betting or drinking at the course, although I've yet to make it into the "International Village", where the story may well be different with regard to booze.

Betting is strictly prohibited in any meaningful sense, although they operate a free Pick Six lottery type thing with a car as first prize if you get all the winners.

Makes for an odd atmosphere to say the least, but sometimes a change is as good as a rest...

Once stood next to the Taxis fence as the field came over in the Velka Pardubicka too, back in the early 1990s, before the Czechs joined the real world and made it less of a pre-meditated death-trap.

A grim experience which I would not care to repeat for anything.
